Baseball Sweeps Three-Game Series with 10-6 Win over Middlebury on Sunday

Recap courtesy of Wesleyan University, Photo by Lianne Yun '18
MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The Wesleyan University baseball team finished off a three-game sweep of NESCAC West Division-rival Middlebury on Sunday, as the Cardinals improved to 4-1 at home during the 2018 season with a 10-6 win at Dresser Diamond.
The Cardinals (13-6) currently sit atop the NESCAC West Division standings with a perfect 3-0 record. Junior Ryan Earle was phenomenal in relief on Sunday, as he earned his third save of the season, pitching the final 3 1/3 innings and giving up no runs. Sophomore Jake Alonzo (2-0) tallied the win in relief, as he struck out five batters in 2 2/3 innings of work.
Middlebury (6-12, 2-4 NESCAC West Division) was led by sophomores Brooks Carroll (3-for-5, two doubles, two RBIs, run) and Alan Guild (2-for-5, double, two RBIs, run).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • After winning the opening two games of the series on Saturday afternoon, Wesleyan was hungry for more success, as it knew the importance of an early-season, three-game sweep. The squad put a seven spot up on the scoreboard in left field during the first inning by showing a great deal of patience at the plate, as five runs crossed home plate on RBI walks. Sophomore Alex Cappitelli capped the scoring in the opening frame on a two-run double to right-center, giving the hosts a 7-0 cushion.
  • Junior Pat Clare, who earned the save in Game 1 on Saturday, started for the Cardinals in the series finale, and gave up three earned runs on six hits in three innings. The Panthers found their way onto the scoreboard in the second, with Guild scoring an unearned run with two down on a throwing error by the catcher.
  • Guild pulled the visitors to within 7-3 in the third on a two-run single through the right side. For the Cardinals, Earle has showcased his versatility all season, excelling on the mound, in the box and at first, as he gave the Cardinals a six-run advantage in the bottom of the third with a two-run, two-out double to right-center.
  • Middlebury stayed aggressive in the batter's box during the fourth, trimming the deficit to five runs on a RBI double to right-center by sophomore Hayden Smith. Wesleyan's 17th-year head coach Mark Woodworth turned to Alonzo in a relief role on the mound, and it paid off, as he struck out the side to get the Cardinals out of the inning without any more damage done.
  • The Panthers kept chipping away in the sixth, pulling to within 9-6 on a two-run double down the right-field line with two outs by Carroll, but Earle was able to get the always-dangerous Guild to fly out to left with two runners in scoring position.
  • Junior Danny Rose capped the scoring for the hosts with a sacrifice fly to right in the seventh, which allowed sophomore Jesse Levy-Rubinett to cross home from third.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS:
  • The Cardinals continued to show the depth of their lineup, as the squad received a hit from seven different players on Sunday.
  • Middlebury led the hits category, 9-7, and both teams were strong in the field, with Wesleyan being charge with the lone error in the matchup.
  • The Panthers left eight runners on base, while Wesleyan stranded seven. The hosts led the way with five extra-base hits, and Middlebury finished with four doubles.
  • Earle and Cappitelli combined for two doubles, four RBIs and two runs, while sophomore Kevin Walek led the way with two runs scored, to go along with a single and an RBI. Smith recorded a 2-for-4 effort for the visitors, including a double, RBI and a run. Junior starting pitcher Colin Waters (0-3) was tagged with the loss.
UP NEXT:
  • The Cardinals will compete against Salve Regina in non-conference action on Tuesday (4 p.m.) at Dresser Diamond.

RWU BASEBALL DOWNED BY CORSAIRS

Recap, photo courtesy of Roger Williams University
DARTMOUTH, Mass. – The Roger Williams University Baseball team suffered a 13-5 loss to the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth Thursday afternoon.

Continuing to do damage in the second inning of ballgames, the Corsairs made today's non-conference clash no exception by posting a four spot against Hawk southpaw Mike Cardelle (Duxbury, Mass.). Tellier was responsible for the big bop of the frame as his double down the left field line unloaded the bases to extend the Corsair lead to 4-0. The Blue and Gold then came back in the fourth and fifth innings with a pair of runs in each turn at the plate, helped by Vasquez and his deposit into the trees behind the left field wall for a two-run dinger – his first of the season.

Roger Williams' bats withstood the cold weather as they heated up in the eighth. Junior infielder Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) dunked a double into left center that drove home freshman leadoff hitter Dean DePreta (Stamford, Conn.). Teammate Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) then smashed a ball to the hot corner, hitting off the glove of third baseman Mike Knell (Dennis, Mass.) that trickled towards the center of the diamond. Dominguez, who never broke his stride after hustling to third, continued on to race home and scored by the time an infielder could get to the loose ball making the score 9-2 in favor of the hosts.

UMass Dartmouth came right back to redeem the happenings in the away half of the frame with four more in the bottom half, highlighted by another run-producing hit by Tellier – this time, a single to left that scored Vasquez. Junior outfielder Chris Wood (Berkley, Mass.) also got in on the action by driving a ball the opposite way for a double to score two.

The Hawks put three on the board in the ninth, but junior reliever Chase Hussey (Claremont, N.H.) got the final out for the squad's milestone victory.

Mitchell College Baseball Takes Two From Newbury

Recap, photo courtesy of Mitchell College
NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Mitchell College baseball team picked up 16-1 and 9-0 victories over Newbury College on Friday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference action at Alumni Field.

In the first game of the day, three Mitchell pitchers combined to hold Newbury to just one hit. Starter Eddie Santiago didn't yield a hit in 4.0 scoreless innings of work, striking out seven to earn his first win of the season.

The theme continued into game two as Mitchell held the Nighthawks to three hits. Starter Jakari Pellegrini tossed 6.0 shutout innings and fanned five, improving to 3-0 on the season.

Mitchell (14-2 overall, 4-1 NECC) and Newbury (7-13 overall, 2-5 NECC) will finish the three-game series with a single nine-inning game on Saturday, March 31 at the New England Baseball Complex in Northborough, Mass. First pitch is slated for 1:30 p.m.

Game 1 – Mitchell 16, Newbury 1

The Mariners sent 15 batters to the plate in the first inning and put up nine runs on the scoreboard. All nine starters recorded a hit in the frame, highlighted by a three-run homer by Kyle Hartenstein.

Mitchell batted around again in the second, adding four more runs to extend the lead to 13-0. Garet Griffin and Steven Pagan each supplied two-run singles in the inning.

The extended time in the dugout didn't faze Santiago, who retired the first 11 batters he faced. After striking out the side in the first, he fanned two in the second and one in the third. A Mitchell error in the fourth gave Newbury its first base runner of the game, but Santiago overcame the miscue to escape the inning unscathed.

A two-run double by Griffin put the Mariners up 15-0 in the fifth. The final Mitchell run came in the sixth courtesy of an RBI double by Rolando Marcano.

Dylan DiFillipo broke up the no-hitter by leading off the sixth inning with a double off the right-field fence. He later scored the lone Newbury run on an infield grounder by David Center.

Game 2 – Mitchell 9, Newbury 0

Mitchell jumped on top early in the nightcap, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Eric Marriott led off with a single and later scored on a base hit by James Rangel. The Mariners then loaded the bases with one out before a Newbury error allowed the second run to score.

An RBI single by Hartenstein made it 3-0 in the second, and Mitchell broke the game open with a six-run third inning. Jack Finnegan, Markus Melendez and Griffin all plated runs with singles, and Hartenstein added a ground-rule double to drive in another.

Javi Martinez had a single and a double to lead the Nighthawks. Starting pitcher Leo Frisello gave up three runs on five hits over 2.0 innings in the loss.

Trinity Baseball Defeated by Brandeis, 5-1

Captain Christian Orsini '18
Hartford, Conn. - Brandeis starting pitcher Greg Tobin (Medway, Mass.) struck out nine while allowing just one run in a complete game victory as the Judges defeated the Trinity College Bantams, 5-1, on Friday afternoon at Murren Family Field at DiBenedetto Stadium. The Bantams fall to 2-6 overall while Brandeis improves to 2-6 on the year. Trinity returns to the diamond tomorrow for a doubleheader at home versus the Westfield State Owls, beginning at noon.
Senior captain CF Christian Orsini (Livingston, N.J.) and sophomore SS Matt Koperniak (Adams, Mass.) were the only two Bantams to record multiple hits as Tobin scattered eight across the nine innings. Orsini finished 2-for-3 with a triple, a stolen base and a run, while Koperniak went 3-for-4 in his fourth multi-hit game of the spring. Trinity rookie starter Justin Olson (Avon, Conn.) went six innings in the loss, allowing three earned while striking out four.
Brandeis struck first in the top of the first when Isaac Fossas (Dudley, Mass.) singled up the middle to score Victor Oppenheimer (West Hills, Calif.) who reached on a base hit of his own earlier in the inning. Both pitchers held strong for the next four innings before trading runs in the sixth to make it a 2-1 ballgame in favor of the Judges.
Brandeis took a 2-0 lead in the top of the sixth when Dan O'Leary (Lynnfield, Mass.) drove home Dan Frey (Ipswich, Mass.) on a two-out, RBI-single. The Bantams chipped away at the deficit in the home half when Orsini led things off with a triple to the right-centerfield gap before coming around to score on a sacrifice fly to left field. Koperniak kept the line moving with a base hit but Tobin limited the damage to the lone run, his only blemish on the day, to keep the lead at 2-1.
The Judges put up a two-spot in the seventh thanks to a RBI-single by Scott Ziegler (Avon, Conn.) and a fielder's choice RBI from Frey to open up a 4-1 lead. The Bantams went hitless in the seventh and eighth innings before Frey scored in the top of the ninth to make it a 5-1 game in favor of the visitors. Trinity made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, leading off with singles by Koperniak and first-year DH Eric Thronson (McLean, Va.), but Tobin retired the side after that to seal the four-run victory.
