NEWPORT, R.I. -- Bridgewater State University and host Salve Regina University played to a 0-0 double overtime draw in a non-conference women's soccer contest on Tuesday afternoon at Brother Michael Reynolds Field in Newport, Rhode Island.

BSU junior goaltender Lauren DeSousa (Taunton, Mass.) equaled a program record with her fourth straight shutout. DeSousa, who extended her scoreless streak to 496 minutes, made nine saves on the day to lower goals against average to an impressive 0.60. The shutout marked her 11th in a BSU uniform.

Salve Regina junior Morgan McBrier (North Kingstown, R.I.) saw her first action in goal this season, registering 12 saves.

The Bears outshot the Seahawks, 19-12, with 11 shots coming in the second half. Bridgewater, however, continues to struggle to put the ball in the net. The Bears have scored only one goal in six games (600 minutes) this season.

Salve Regina earned ten corner kick opportunities to Bridgewater State's three. The Seahawks had a corner kick in each overtime period, the final one producing a shot from freshman Kayla McLaughlin (East Hampton, Conn.) that glanced off the crossbar.

BSU freshman Alana Vincent (Taunton, Mass.) led all player with five shots including four on goal.

Salve Regina earns its first draw of the year as the Seahawks are now 4-3-1 overall. Bridgewater State sees its record go to 1-2-3. The Bears still dominate the all-time series between the two teams, 18-3-1.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday at noon with conference games. The Bears host Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) foe Mass. Maritime Academy, while the Seahawks travel to Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) rival Wentworth.

Seahawks Top Bears with Late Goal

NEWPORT, R.I. - A goal with seventy seconds left in the game by Salve Regina gave the Seahawks a 2-1 victory over Coast Guard in non-conference action.

With the loss the Bears fall to 6-7 on the season while Salve Regina improves to 6-8.

The majority of the first half saw a zero, zero tie until the final five minutes of the period.
The Seahawks started the scoring in 41st minute when freshman Abby McMackin scored an unassisted goal to give Salve Regina a 1-0 lead.

The Bears did not allow the Seahawks lead to last long as just over two minutes later senior Caroline Eastman took a pass from fellow senior Taylor Peace and netted her first goal of the season.

The game look destined for overtime until sophomore Leah Siefring found sophomore Lea Adams at the top of the Coast Guard penalty box. Adams ripped a shot into the left corner of the net for her second goal over the year at the 88:10 mark.

Freshman Rachel Boohar (5-7) made eight saves on 18 shots, 10 on goal. Boohar is fifth in the NEWMAC with 65 saves on the season.

Freshman Carly Pala and sophomore Morgan McBrier combined in goal making three saves on 11 shots, four on goal. Pala earned the victory as she was in net when the Seahawks scored the game winner.

Bears Top Lyons in Overtime

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. – Freshman Olivia Holt fired in the game-winning shot in the 95th minute to lead Coast Guard to a 1-0 overtime victory at Mount Holyoke College on Tuesday in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).

The Bears move to 6-6 overall and are now 2-4-0 in conference play, while the Lyons slip to 8-4-1 with a 3-2-1 mark in the NEWMAC.

Controlling play to open the overtime session, junior Terry Netusil settled the ball and sent a cross through to Holt. Shifting the ball to the right, Holt fired a long shot past the reach of junior goalkeeper Zoe Marshall for her fourth goal of the year and her second game winning goal of the season.

It was an even game to open things in the first stanza as the Bears held a slight edge in shots, 9-6. Mount Holyoke saw its best opportunity come in the 22nd minute as first year forward Sara Sanaú Ruiz worked the near side corner and battled around not one, but two defenders, before splitting the line at the right side and sending a shot in that was saved by freshman goalkeeper Rachel Boohar.
Coast Guard took control in the second half of action, firing a number of shots in on Marshall. Senior Sarah Hills had a number of the chances, including a great shot that went just wide after splitting the Lyons defense.

Netusil nearly made it a 1-0 lead in regulation when her shot through traffic in the 60th minute sailed toward the left side. Marshall dove and just touched the ball away with her right hand to preserve the tie.

Despite a number of chances for the Bears, who held a 14-3 edge in shots for the period, the teams headed into overtime where Holt secured the win.

Boohar (5-6) earned the victory, stopping three shots for the Bears, while her counterpart, Marshall (7-4-1), made 10 saves on the evening.

Coast Guard returns to the pitch on Thursday, October 15 in a 4pm contest at Salve Regina.

Engineers Sneak by Bears in OT

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Junior Emma Turton's goal in the 96th minute gave WPI a 2-1 overtime victory over Coast Guard in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action.

With the loss the Bears drop to 5-5 overall and 1-3 in conference play. The Engineers improve to 3-1-1 in NEWMAC competition and 9-2-1 overall.

WPI came out in the first half on the offensive as Turton slipped through on the right side and sent a shot to the far post. Freshman goalkeeper Rachel Boohar lunged to her left and made the diving save to end the threat.

Senior Emily Doherty was the next Engineer player to test Boohar when she found space on the left side of the field and put a shot on goal. Doherty's shot was stopped by junior defender Katie Clark who cleared the ball out of danger.

In the 20th minute Doherty received the ball again in the middle of the offensive third of the field and dribbled to goal. Doherty was able to hold off Clark and fired a shot past Boohar for her conference leading 15th goal of the season. The goal was also the 34th of Doherty's career passing Megan Forti for second all time in WPI history.

Coast Guard had their best chance of the first half late in the period when senior Hanna Hansson lined up a free kick from the top of the Engineers penalty box. Jansson let loose a shot but put it over the crossbar and out of play.

At the start of the second half the Bears wasted little time knotting the game up at one as senior Caroline Eastman hit a cross to the back post from the right side of the field. The ball sailed over junior goalkeeper Abbey Teliska to freshman Olivia Holt. Holt redirected the ball with her chest into the back of the net for her third goal of the season just 31 seconds into the period.

The half continued to be a defensive affair until junior Brianna Grisell was able to touch a ball pass a WPI defender. Grisell ran down her touch and sent a looping shot towards goal that was out of the reach of Teliska but just wide of the net.

The Engineers had the final scoring chance of regulation when sophomore Karina Larson lined up a free kick from the top of the Bears 18 yard box. Larson snapped a hard shot towards goal, but sent it just high as it skimmed the top of the cross bar and out of play.

The game headed to overtime where in the 96th minute senior Julia Macleod found Turton with a diagonal pass on the right side of the field. Turton took a touch to control and sent a rocket into the upper right corner of the goal for the game winner and her fifth of the year.

Boohar (4-5) faced 19 shots, 10 on goal, making eight saves and allowing two goals. She is fifth in the conference with 46 saves on the year.

Teliska (9-2-1) earned her ninth win of the season making two saves on 11 shots, three on goal, allowing one goal. Freshman Gabbi Hoops spelled Teliska for 5:33 stopping the one shot on goal she faced.

The Bears return to action on Saturday, October 10th, when they travel to Babson Park, Massachusetts for a NEWMAC game against the Babson Beavers. Kickoff is 12:00.

Etzel Posts Shutout, Brown Women’s Soccer Plays Bryant to 0-0 Draw

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Freshman goalkeeper Christine Etzel notched her third shutout of the season as Brown University women's soccer played to a 0-0 draw for the second time in as many outings, tying Bryant University on Wednesday night at Stevenson Field.

The Bears (3-4-2) controlled play against the Bulldogs (0-8-2), holding advantages in shots (31-10), shots on goal (10-3), and corner kicks (13-3), but neither side could find the back of the net in the 110-minute, double-overtime affair.

"I thought we controlled the overtime. From the opening 15 minutes, we just didn't have the intensity that we had against Dartmouth, but it got better," 39th-year head coach Phil Pincince said. "I thought in the overtimes – the two 10s –that's where we should have been from the beginning. It gradually got better and better."

Brown increased its pressure in the 20 minutes of overtime, recording eight shots, two shots on goal, and eight corner kicks in the extra sessions while not allowing Bryant to tally a shot or a corner.
Etzel (Madison, Conn.) made three saves in her second straight shutout while Brown's back four of sophomores Maclaine Lehan (Shrewsbury, Mass.) and Sarah Cobb (North Tustin, Calif.) and freshmen Megan Grant (Carlsbad, Calif.) and Nicole Phillips (Rolling Hills Estates, Calif.) contributed to the clean sheet.

Bryant net-minder Kaylan Conrad stopped 10 shots, including a penalty kick, in her first shutout of the season.

Junior Charlotte Beach (New Haven, Conn.), who totaled a game-high six shots, nearly broke the deadlock in the 100th minute as she drove a shot from the edge of the box, which ricocheted squarely off the left post.

In the 109th minute, sophomore Mikela Waldman (San Francisco, Calif.) fired a shot on target as Conrad just managed to parry the ball away from the frame.

Brown remains undefeated against Bryant, claiming a 6-0-2 record in the all-time series.

Next, Brown returns to Ivy League play at Columbia University on Saturday at 4 p.m.
