Huemme had two goals giving him 17 on the season while freshman Jack Pope had a game high four points with three goals and one assist which was on Huemme's game winning goal. Freshman Benner Geurtsen also tallied a goal and an assist.
The Cougars were led by sophomore Will Mandracchia who scored a team high three goals.
Mandracchia is third in the conference with 24 goals on the season. Junior Nick Johnson, who leads the NEWMAC in points (44) and assists (23), had a goal and an assist.
Clark held a slim one goal lead at half time as senior Rob Holden and Johnson scored the final two goals of the half giving the Cougars a 3-2 advantage going into the locker room.
The Bears took their first lead of the game at 4-3 as Guertsen scored an unassisted goal with 8:05 to go in the third quarter.
Mandracchia answered for Clark, as the Cougars scored three of the final four goals of the period, two by Mandracchia, for a 6-5 lead going into the final quarter of regulation.
Coast Guard was able to take the lead on goal by Pope and freshman Anthony Wyler, before Mandracchia's goal with 2:19 to go in the fourth quarter would push the game to overtime.
Freshman Colin Cashin won the opening faceoff of the first overtime, and after a Coast Guard timeout, Pope found Huemme at the top of the box who cranked a shot into the upper left corner for the game winner and the Bears first overtime victory in program history.
Freshman goalie Trey Johnson (6-2) made 10 saves on 17 shots faced allowing seven goals in 61:29 minutes of work. Johnson continues to be one of the top goalies in the NEWMAC and country as he is first in the conference in goals-against average (6.45) and is second in save percentage (59.2) and goals against (51). His goals-against average is currently seventh in the country while his save percentage is 31st as of April 8th.
Junior Drew Riopelle-Tyrrell (8-2) made 15 saves on 23 shots faced allowing eight goals. Riopelle-Tyrrell is also one of the top goalies in the conference as he is first in save percentage (60%), second in goals-against average and fifth in goals allowed (80). His save percentage is ninth in the nation.
Cashin was 8-18 on face-offs and collected four groundballs. Junior Blaise Curtis and freshman Connor Ellis each had a game high six groundballs leading the Bears to 42-32 advantage over Clark. Cashin is third in the NEWMAC with 52 groundballs, while the entire Coast Guard team is first with 401.
The Bear's defense pressed Clark the entire game forcing 11 turnovers and only allowing the Cougars to complete 10-16 clears including zero in the fourth quarter (0-4). Coast Guard is tied for 21st in the country in caused turnovers per game (11.89) and is first in the NEWMAC with 118 caused turnovers.
The Bears are back in action on Tuesday, April 13th when they host Plymouth State for a nonconference match-up. Game time is 4:00 pm.
