PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Five different Bears notched multiple-hit games as
Brown University softball took a 9-1 win in game one over Princeton
University before falling, 3-1, in game two in an Ivy League
doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Brown Softball Field.
On the second day of their home-opening weekend, the Bears (16-11,
5-3 Ivy) earned a run-rule win over the Tigers (11-21, 4-4 Ivy) in six
innings in the opener prior to the visitors gaining a 3-1 decision in
the nightcap. Brown swept Cornell yesterday for the first time since
2000 in its first home date of 2016.
Between the two games, sophomore pitcher Katie Orona (Pueblo, Colo.) threw 8.0 innings, allowing one run on six hits with five strikeouts and one walk.
In game one, junior Christina Andrews (Southlake, Texas) hit a three-run home run, her second homer of the season.
Next, Brown hosts Dartmouth College for a pair of Ivy League North
Division doubleheaders on
Saturday, Apr. 16 and Sunday, Apr. 17 with
both game days beginning at 12:30 p.m.
Game 1: Brown 9, Princeton 1 (6 Innings)
Andrews went 3-for-4 with three RBIs on her three-run blast and two
runs scored, four other Bears enjoyed multi-hit games, and Brown topped
Princeton, 9-1, in six innings in game one.
Junior Julia Schoenewald (Jamison, Pa.) finished the game 3-for-3 with an RBI and a run while freshman Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) went 2-for-3 with two doubles, two RBIs, and a run. In the circle, Orona (8-5) earned the win, pitching 6.0 innings and permitting one run on six hits with three strikeouts.
Brown opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the second. Schoenewald, Andrews, and junior Lauren Hanna
(Milford, Mass.) each singled to load the bases before Venegas singled
to left field to score a run. A second run came home on an error on
Venegas's hit before senior Janet Leung (Mississauga, Ontario) brought home a run with an infield single.
The Bears extended their edge to 7-0 with four runs in the bottom of
the fourth. Schoenewald drove in the first run with a single to left
field prior to Andrews launching her three-run shot over the wall in
right center field.
Princeton pulled within 7-1 in the top of the fifth as Danielle Dockx
led off the inning with a single and later came home on a ground ball
from Haley Hineman.
Lotz ended the game in the last of the sixth, sending a two-run double to left center to make the score 9-1. Freshman Cat Seitz (Poway, Calif.), Venegas, and Park each singled earlier in the frame to set the table.
Princeton's Shanna Christian (2-7) took the loss, hurling 5.1 innings
and conceding nine runs, six earned, on 14 hits with five strikeouts.
Game 2: Princeton 3, Brown 1
Brown's pitching staff allowed just two earned runs, but Princeton
kept the Bears at bay to force a split of the twin bill with a 3-1
decision in game two.
Freshman Annie Scarangella
(Tucson, Ariz.) paced the Bears at the plate in the contest with a
2-for-3 effort while Schoenewald drove in the hosts' only run in the
game.
Orona and junior pitcher Gina Chieffallo
(Eynon, Pa.) threw 3.1 innings of scoreless relief. Chieffallo pitched
1.1 innings, allowing one hit, while Orona struck out two batters and
did not give up a hit in 2.0 innings.
Junior pitcher Leah Nakashima (San Jose, Calif.) made the start, giving up three runs, two earned, on eight hits over 3.2 innings in the setback (3-5).
For the Tigers, Ashley La Guardia (5-5) picked up the win,
surrendering just one run on four hits with three strikeouts in 6.0
innings. Riley Wilkinson came on for the seventh, tallying her first
save of the year and allowing no runs and one hit.
Princeton scored all of its runs in the top of the fourth as Skye
Jerpbak began the scoring with an RBI on an infield single. Hineman
plated a run with a single to left field, and a third run scored later
in the frame on an error.
The hosts attempted a comeback in the bottom of the fifth as Venegas
singled and Leung absorbed a pitch to open the stanza. Lotz later walked
to load the bases with one out, and Schoenewald brought home a run with
a ground out before the visitors escaped the jam.
For the second time in as many days, Park threw out a runner at the
plate from right field, doing so in the top of the second against the
Tigers in game two.
