At this time we believe this is an isolated incident. No one else was hurt.
There were multiple additional gasoline cans inside the vehicle. As a precautionary measure, we have called in assistance from other municipal, state and federal authorities to assist us in clearing this vehicle and clearing this individual’s home prior to police entering it. We are also evacuating the homes in the immediate vicinity around his home.
The emergency room and the buildings around it have been evacuated
pending a more detailed search by state and federal authorities of the
vehicle. Representatives of Middlesex Hospital will speak in a moment in
more detail about the hospital’s response.
Also out of an abundance of caution we have called in additional police officers and sent them to secure other important public facilities, including our schools, though we have no reason to believe that any of those facilities or people within them, are in danger.
We are not releasing this individual’s name and personal information at this time. He was transported by Lifestar to the burn center at Bridgeport Hospital.
We have opened the city’s emergency operations center and it is staffed with representatives of each pertinent city agency and representatives of Middlesex Hospital and the Middletown Schools.
I want to be clear that it’s early in the investigation and we do not know this individual’s motives.
We'll likely hold another briefing later this afternoon or early this evening and will keep you posted.
