Norwalk named Tree City USA for a fifteenth consecutive year

Norwalk, Connecticut - For the fifteenth consecutive year, the City of Norwalk was named a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation in honor of its effective urban forest management. “Trees are real assets to our community. They are an essential part of what makes Norwalk such a livable and beautiful city,” said Norwalk Mayor Harry Rilling. “We’re very proud of the fact that we plant trees every year and have now been named a Tree City USA community for 15 years.”

Norwalk achieved Tree City USA recognition by meeting the program’s four requirements: a tree

Engaging Experiences Scheduled for PVDFest Ideas 2019 Released

Explore the Culture of The Creative Capital through a multitude of moments

PROVIDENCE, RI – PVDFest is about exchanging fresh ideas and new creative concepts from Providence’s vibrant cultural communities and around the world. This year’s PVDFest Ideas brings together a constellation of programs highlighting innovations in culture, technology and more throughout the duration of the festival and the first week of June. PVDFest Ideas will showcase exciting events like the Jewelry District Historic Walking Tour; a family-friendly Make-A-Kinder Providence Make-A-Thon Pitch Fest; and will build off last year’s sold out Ideas Conference keynote with a “Welcome To Your World” Book Club and Reception. This year’s keynote address, delivered by Lars Jan, a genre-bending media artist, will provide insights into HOLOSCENES, his large-scale installation/performance exploring the relationships between climate change and human behavior.

From housing the first Providence building with working electricity, to acting as an important site for the development of steam engine technology, and incubating spaces where medical breakthroughs are taking place today, the story of the Jewelry District is one of new, revolutionary ideas. The Jewelry District Historic Walking Tour will discuss the past, present, and future of the neighborhood, highlighting 100 years of innovation, civic pride, and culture. This walking tour will be led by Jewelry District resident and neighborhood historian, Olin Thompson.

Providence is a maker city; a place where artistry and craftsmanship are encouraged and celebrated.

May 2nd: Dr. David Schiller on Brain Fog: Most people have experienced brain fog at one
time or another. It’s often described as a “cloudy-headed” feeling with symptoms that include
poor memory, difficulty focusing, and struggling with articulation. Mental fog can be caused by
overworking, multitasking, substance abuse, diet and poor sleep habits as well as disease
processes. Join David Schiller, DC, DACNB, CCSP, FIAMA to learn about this problem and
what can be done about it.

Caregiver Series continues on Tuesday, May 7th at noon, Katie Vanovitch of Senior Helpers
will present the third in our series of Caregiver Support Talks. She’ll focus on what you need to
know to care for your loved one. It’s most important to recognize your loved one’s need for
dignity and self respect as you care for him or her, especially when dealing with matters of
personal hygiene. It’s very hard to depend on another to help perform the most personal and
basic tasks of daily life. It can also be difficult for the new caregiver to undertake these tasks for
a loved one. When a friend or family member becomes disabled, the inclination of the caregiver
is usually to over-care. Registration required.

SENIOR AND DISABLED TAX RELIEF
Application Period ends Monday, May 15, 2019

UI Construction Activities Beginning April 29th

Fairfield, Connecticut - The United Illuminating Company (UI) has announced that beginning the week of April 29th it will be performing electric distribution work at Sacred Heart University, along Route 59, and within the Hawthorne Substation (“Substation”) property line.

Construction noise may be heard during working hours (M-F, 7am-5pm, with weekend work from 8am-5pm, if necessary). This work should not affect traffic along Route-59. It is expected that construction will be complete in August of this year.

Further, in the coming week, UI will be filing a Petition for Declaratory Ruling with the Connecticut Siting Council. In it, UI will be proposing to replace a communications relay to comply with an ISO New England Inc. Directory 1 waiver request submitted by The Connecticut Light and Power Company d/b/a Eversource Energy. During this construction, UI will also replace antiquated controllers in the Substation yard. If approved, construction is expected to begin in the Fall of this year.

Both of these construction activities are being made in an effort to continue electric system improvements and increase electric reliability to better serve customers and prevent outages. No electric outage or interruption to electric service will be necessary during either of these projects.

If you have any questions concerning either of these activities, please contact Samantha Marone, UI’s Manager of Public Outreach at 203-499-3824.

Donation Ceremony for the Gift of Dragon Boats to Rhode Island

TAIWAN – The Rhode Island Delegation, led by Lt. Governor Dan McKee, attended a donation ceremony for the gift of Dragon Boats to the City of Pawtucket. The Taipei Economic and Cultural Office donated the boats as a continuation of their ongoing partnership in support of Pawtucket’s Taiwan Day Festival, which brings thousands of people to Pawtucket and the Blackstone Valley every year.

The ceremony was held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) for the Republic of China (Taiwan) on April 17th and hosted by Deputy Minister Hsu Szu-chien. The ceremony underscored the commitment to deepening people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two sides. Director-General Douglas Y.T. Hsu of the Taipei Economic & Cultural Office in Boston officially announced the $120,000 gift in the weeks leading up to the Delegation’s trade mission.

Coordinated by the MOFA, the donation was offered to support the expansion of the annual Rhode Island Dragon Boat Races and Taiwan Day Festival, now in its 20th year. The Dragon Boats will be delivered in time for the 20th Annual Rhode Island Dragon Boat Races & Taiwan Day Festival. They will be added to a fleet that includes 6 more dragon boats that were donated in 2004.

The RI Delegation had the opportunity to see the dragon boats, which are currently being built. The new boats will fit 18 paddlers. The boats, that weigh close to a ton each and are about 40 feet long, will come with life jackets, paddles, and steering oars.

Offered ahead of the 20th edition of the festival later this year, the donation also comes as Taiwan and the U.S. mark the 40th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act. The RI Delegation attended the Anniversary Celebration as they are visiting Taiwan to strengthen the current business relationships in the Blackstone Valley and between Taiwan and the State of RI.

The Dragon Boat Races and Taiwan Day Festival will begin Friday night, September 6th and continue on Saturday, September 7th.

Mayor Rilling’s Clean City Initiative- Earth Day City Wide Cleanup

Norwalk, Connecticut - Please join Mayor Harry Rilling, the City of Norwalk, and Keep Norwalk Beautiful for the Mayor’s Clean City Initiative Spring Cleanup, scheduled for Saturday, April 27 beginning at 10 a.m. Meet at Norwalk City Hall where Mayor Rilling will hand out gloves, bags, T-shirts, and litter pick-up tools, while supplies last. Your team can then choose a location such as your neighborhood, local park or beach, business area, schoolyard, or shoreline. Help Keep Norwalk Beautiful!

“Norwalk is a beautiful city that offers so much - from beautiful parks and beaches to suburban and urban living. Litter in our streets and open spaces not only hurts how the city looks, but it is also harmful to the environment and our health. Keeping our city clean requires a continual effort on the part of businesses, residents and city leaders - we all must do our part. If everyone would commit to adopting a small spot around their homes or businesses, it would truly make a difference,” said Mayor Harry W. Rilling. “The Citywide cleanup planned for April 27 is a wonderful way for the public to step up, volunteer, and have a direct impact in their community. I know residents take great pride in our city and I hope they will join me for this great event.”

Each cleanup team that sends a before and after picture of a cleanup location will be entered into a drawing for gift cards!

Mayor Rilling: Why We Need a Community Services Department.

Norwalk, Connecticut - Norwalk is a fantastic community and I brag about all we have to offer every chance I get. From our stunning parks and beaches and excellent public schools to a vibrant downtown and beautiful neighborhoods, there is something in Norwalk for everyone.

While there is much to be proud of in our great city, there is currently something missing. Consider this: 14 of the 15 largest communities by population in the state have a social or community services division and/or a state office offering these services. The one missing? Norwalk.

Norwalk is the sixth largest city in the state, but has no official department tasked with handling community services. Various city departments jump in when and where they can, but it is not enough. Norwalk used to have a Social Services Department, but it was abandoned at the time because the State of Connecticut was providing similar services. Now, without the state having a presence in Norwalk, residents are navigating a complex maze in search of resources in their time of need.

Local nonprofit agencies in and around Norwalk serve as a tremendous resource for our neighbors.
