Reminds Residents Use of Fireworks is Illegal in Connecticut

FAIRFIELD —  With the Fourth of July fast approaching, Chief Robert Kalamaras and the Fairfield Police Department wish to share a reminder of several important safety tips as residents prepare to celebrate Independence Day at home and by the beach.

The Fairfield Police Department will take enhanced

measures — including ramped up enforcement of beach parking regulations — in order to ensure that community members are celebrating safely and that fireworks are not being used at any time by unlicensed individuals.

“We hope all of our community members enjoy this year’s Fourth of July safely and responsibly,” Chief Kalamaras said. “As a reminder, residents should refrain from using illegal fireworks as they pose serious risks such as boldly injury, property damage or destruction and death. In the case of an emergency, residents should call 9-1-1 immediately.”

Fairfield Police remind residents that it is illegal in Connecticut for non-professional, non-licensed individuals to purchase, use, possess or sell fireworks. Items such as party poppers, snakes, smoke devices and anything that emits a flame are not legal for private use in Connecticut. 

Sparklers and fountains, which are not considered fireworks in the state of Connecticut, may be sold, but may not legally be sold to, or used by persons younger than 16. Only sparklers and fountains, which are non-explosive and non-aerial, are legal in Connecticut.

Additionally, the Fairfield Police Department reminds residents to be aware of these key safety tips during Fourth of July celebrations:

• Do not drive under the influence of drugs or alcohol
• Be mindful of pedestrians
• Attend organized and permitted fireworks displays only
• Remember, alcohol/drugs and fireworks do not mix
• Keep pets indoors

The Fairfield Police Department also urges residents to observe the following tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on getting home safely following Fourth of July celebrations:

• Even if you’ve had only one alcoholic beverage, do not plan on driving
• Designate a sober driver or use public transportation or a ride-share service to get home safely
• Take keys away from individuals who are under the influence and are planning to drive. Alcohol and drugs can impair perception, judgment, motor skills and memory, which are critical for safe and responsible driving
• If you see an impaired driver on the road, call 911
