Men’s Golf: Kirby Repeats as New England PGA Champion

Roger Williams University Head Men's Golf Coach Ed Kirby took home his second consecutive New England PGA Championship on Thursday, finishing the three-round tournament with a 216 (+3).

The tournament, hosted at the Bay Club at Mattapoisett.  The Par 71 course saw Kirby shoot a 70 for the opening round, ahead of a pair of 73s in rounds two and three, closing the tournament three over par.

The Roger Williams University Men's Golf team will begin its season on Monday, Sept. 8, at the Warrior Invitational hosted by Eastern Connecticut State at the Mohegan Sun Golf Club in Baltic, Conn. The win marks Kirby's third New England PGA Championship win.

Volleyball Falls in Five in 2025 Opener at Pace

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Starting off the 2025 campaign with a non-conference road match, the University of Bridgeport's volleyball team dropped a five-set decision at Pace University (22–25, 18–25, 25–23, 25–22, 11–15) on Thursday night.

After falling in the first two sets, the Purple Knights showed terrific resilience in forcing a fifth and final frame. Pace answered with a 7-2 spurt to open the decisive game before ultimately closing out the match, 15-11.

Bridgeport utilized strong play from junior Hailey Jessen who posted a double-double of 12 kills (team high) and 10 digs while freshman Madison Mohan added 11 putaways on a .435 hitting percentage.

Sophomore Ava Casales kept the offense moving with 19 assists (team high) and eight digs, while Kenyce Johnson and Elaine DeLallo anchored the defense with 12 digs apiece. DeLallo also chipped in a pair of service aces. 

Analdys Abreu, meanwhile, added seven kills (team-high .500 hitting percentage) and a team-high five total blocks while Layla Wood contributed six kills and four block assists.

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – Facing off against 12th-ranked Franklin Pierce to begin their 2025 campaign, the University of Bridgeport's men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to the Ravens on Thursday night.

FPU's lone goal came in the 44th minute of the first half when Andy Chisholm knocked in a loose ball in the middle of the box. 

The Purple Knights matched Franklin Pierce throughout the contest, holding a 9–8 edge in total shots and finishing level in shots on target at four apiece.

UB's goalkeeper Viktor MaÅ¡ek recorded three saves in his Purple Knight debut, while Franklin Pierce's David Skorodumov earned the shutout with four stops.

Skorodumov needed to make a pair of tough stops in the first half, including a one-on-one situation with Kaanturk Akgul in the 24th minute.

Despite a strong push in the second half, including four corner kicks, the Purple Knights were unable to find the equalizer. UB also lost 1-0 to Franklin Pierce to begin the 2024 season.
