Bears Earn First Shutout of the Season

CLERMONT, Fla. - Coast Guard went 1-1 once again on day two of their 2016 spring break trip as they blanked Monmouth 8-0 and fell to Northwestern-St. Paul 12-11.

Senior Sarah Sorensen pitched six innings of two hit ball leading the Bears to their second win of the season.

Freshman Hayden Short was 2-3 with two RBI's and a run scored while classmate Allyson Holfinger was 1-3 with two RBI's of her own. Sophomore Casey Cruzpino was 3-3, including her first career triple and drove in one run. Junior Sarah Cammuso and freshman Malia Hindle each added a RBI of their own.

Coast Guard got on the board in the second inning as Cruzpino hit a single to right field driving in senior Hannah Ingerson from third giving the Bears and early one run lead.

In the bottom of the third, Coast Guard erupted for four runs on four hits, highlighted by Holfinger's two RBI single with two outs to go in the inning.

The Bears wrapped up the game with one run in each of their final three innings to complete their first shutout of the season with a season high 12 hits and eight runs.

Sorensen (1-1) struck out three and allowed two runs, none earned on her way to her first win of the season.

Sophomore Kaylee Kurtz took the loss (0-1) for the Scots as she went four innings allowing six runs, four earned and struck out one. Johnna Schultz came in relief pitching one inning giving up two runs, both earned.

Game 4: Northwestern - St. Paul (1-6) 12 Coast Guard (2-2) 11

Coast Guard could not hang on to an early lead in their second game of the day as Northwestern came from behind to snag their first win of the season.

Freshman Emily Hogan went 3-3 with a career high four RBI's and two runs scored to lead the Bears. Junior Sarah Cammuso was 2-4 with two runs scored. Junior Cherokee Strickland was 1-3 with a double and an RBI while sophomore Casey Cruzpino was was 1-3 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Senior Hannah Ingerson, sophomore Emma Hvozdovich and freshman Sharayah Simco all added RBI's of their own.

Junior Ann Lokke and was 4-5 with three RBI's while freshman Morgan Pfaff (2-3) and junior Ellen Larkin (2-5) had two RBI's of their own for the Eagles. Freshman Mindy Forcier was 4-4 with four runs scored.

With the score knotted at two going into the top of the third, the Bears batted around coming up with six runs on four hits. Cruzpino and Hogan each had two RBI singles over this stretch while Ingerson and Simco tacked on their RBI's as well.

Northwestern clawed their way back into the game tying it at nine apiece in the bottom of the sixth.
Coast Guard took back the lead in the top of the seventh, 11-9 but could not fend of the Eagles as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and won the game on a walk off two run single to left by Larkin making the final score 12-11.

Senior Sarah Sorensen (1-2) took the loss pitching 6.1 innings giving up nine runs, seven earned, on 16 hits and striking out four.

Northwestern used three pitchers as freshman Meghan Schroeder earned her first win of the season (1-0) going one inning, giving up two runs on one hit. Lokke got the start going 2.2 innings giving up eight earned run on six hits.

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday, March 9th as they take on Pittsburgh-Greensburg and Wesleyan of Georgia at 11:00 and 1:00.
