The Bears now lead the Mariners 9-6 in the race for the Superintendent's Trophy with five more Spring sports to go. A point is awarded for each sport the two teams face each other in each season.
Coast Guard led 10-2 after seven innings and 13-7 heading to the ninth only to see the Mariners score six in the top of the ninth to stun the Bears and tie the game 13-13.
Duncan led off the home half of the ninth with a one hopper off the centerfield fence and before
scoring on a wild pitch. Coast Guard, which has played four straight one run games in Florida, improves to 4-2 overall and win the series from the Mariners, two games to one.
Coast Guard scored four times in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie and take a 5-1 lead. Junior Kyle Jackson and senior Cory Sonnega each had two-run singles in the inning.
The Bears added five runs in the seventh with sophomore Zach Serna delivering a two-run single and classmate Alex Murdoch adding an RBI single while Duncan drew a bases loaded walk to push the lead to 10-2.
Merchant Marine got five in the eighth to pull to within 10-7, but the Bears responded with three in the home half of the inning with freshman Will Stephens ripping a two-run triple to center as the Bears pushed the lead to 13-7.
The Mariners sent 11 men to the plate in the top of the ninth and tied the game on a two-out RBI double by Richard Kernan, who was stranded as the go ahead run at third base.
Coast Guard starter junior Eric Vrissis pitched well going six innings and allowing five hits and just two runs, one earned while walking three and fanning two. Freshman Walter Harris got the final out of the ninth and was the winning pitcher to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Senior Kyle Wood and Jackson each had two hits in the win for Coast Guard.
The Bears are back in action on Wednesday at noon when they take on Lakeland at the Gene Cusic Classic.
