Brown University: Field Hockey Falls to Quinnipiac, 2-0

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Brown field hockey team was defeated by Quinnipiac, 2-0, in a non-conference contest on Monday afternoon at Goldberger Family Field.

Neither team could create a solid scoring chance in the first half, as the teams entered the break tied 0-0. Brown and Quinnipiac both registered three shots in the stanza, while the Bobcats had four penalty corners to the Bears' one.

Quinnipiac's (3-10) Dayna Barlow broke the scoreless tie at 41:40 of the second. Savanna Reilly started the play when she carried the ball on the end line and slipped it by sophomore goalie Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) to Barlow, who then knocked it in for a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats added to their lead at 54:23 when Angie King brought the score to 2-0 with her goal.

Overall, Brown (6-4) ended up claiming the shot lead 9-7 in the contest. Quinnipiac held the

U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team Captures Fourth Straight Victory Earning a Total of 12 Event Points

DEODORO, Brazil - They shook hands after a draw in Lancaster, Pa. knowing all too well it wasn’t over; there was more to the story. Only a few weeks before the Olympic Games during the Citi Rio Send-Off Series, India and the U.S. Olympic Women’s Field Hockey Team’s walked away with one win apiece. The moment to prove who has enough gusto to edge out the other was revealed on the ultimate stage at the Deodoro Olympic Park under the spotlight of watchful eyes of those in the stadium stands and those glued to their television sets at home. Keeping match tempo in fifth gear, Team USA drove hard, engines at full tilt for 60 minutes to leave the pitch as victors with a goal line 3-0. The missing element between the Citi Rio Send-Off Series and the Olympic Games? USWNT dynamite defender and captain Lauren Crandall (Doylestown, Pa.). A key contributor in the backfield and leadership, Crandall was out recovering and prepping in the weeks leading up to Rio. Now, rejoining the team, the United States is the strongest it has ever been.

Brown's Angus Finishes Play with Field Hockey Canada at Pan American Junior Championships

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown field hockey junior Katarina Angus (West Vancouver, British Columbia) competed with the Canadian Under-21 Women's National Field Hockey team in the 2016 Pan American Junior Championships in Trinidad & Tobago.

The tournament began on Thursday, March 31 and went through Saturday, April 9. Angus and the team opened Pool B play against Mexico on March 31 with a 4-0 win. The Canadians next fell to the United States, 5-1, on April 2. Closing out pool play, the squad posted a 4-0 win against the host team, Trinidad & Tobago, on April 3. Angus served as the team captain in the contest and later discussed the win.

Finishing Pool B in second place with six points, the Canadians squared off against Uruguay, the third-place team from Pool A, in the quarterfinals on April 5. After a 0-0 score through regulation, the game went to a penalty shoot out where the Canadians won, 5-3. The team next took on Argentina, the winner of Pool A with nine points, on April 7 for the semifinal and fell, 9-0.

In the third place game on April 9, the Canadians were defeated 3-0 by Chile, thus finishing in fourth place in the tournament.

A 2015 Second Team All-Ivy selection, Angus wrapped up the fall recording a career-high in goals (4) and points (9) while also adding an assist. The defender also tallied two game-winning goals. In addition, Angus contributed two defensive saves on the year, tying her for seventh in the conference in that category. 

Brown Field Hockey Nets Multiple Academic Honors from NFHCA

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Brown field hockey freshmen Maddie Ayles (Westwood, Mass.), Emma Caviness (Stow, Mass.) and Ellie Seid (Larchmont, N.Y.) were named ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I Scholars of Distinction in an announcement by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on Wednesday. To qualify for the award, the student-athletes achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.90 or higher through the first semester of the 2015-16 academic year.

In addition, 14 Bears were also named to the ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Collegiate National Academic Squad. The National Academic Squad recognizes student-athletes who have achieved a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or higher through the first semester of the 2015-16 academic year. Senior Emily Arciero (Avon, Conn.), Ayles, junior Brooke Bonfiglio (Bronxville, N.Y.), Caviness, junior Lucy Green (Providence, R.I.), freshman Carly Kabelac (Potomac, Md.), sophomore Katherine Kallergis (Lake Forest, Ill.), senior Alexis Miller (Caldwll, N.J.), sophomore Maggie Mostoller (Hummelstown, Pa.), sophomore Emma Quigley (Hopewell, N.J.), senior Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.), sophomore Alexa Scala (Rumford, R.I.), Seid and sophomore Ashley Waldron (East Walpole, Mass.) accomplished the honor.

As a team, Brown earned the ZAG Field Hockey/NFHCA Division I National Academic Team Award for a 3.0 or higher team GPA.

Miller’s Late Tally Lifts Field Hockey Over Georgetown, 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – With the game tied at 1-1 with two minutes remaining in regulation, senior Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.) drove strong into the arc and buried the game-winning goal at 68:34 to lead Brown field hockey over Georgetown, 2-1, in a non-conference match-up on Sunday at Goldberger Field. The Bears move to .500 with the win and stand at 5-5 while Georgetown slips to 5-6.

"Today was a hard fought match," said Brown head coach Jill Reeve. "Playing back-to-back games is a tough ask and our kids stuck together and finished the opportunities they had."

Brown got on the board first, early in the opening half at 6:29, when senior Anna Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) received a feed from senior Hannah Rogers (Los Altos, Calif.) in front of the goal and notched her first tally of the season. Senior Emily Arciero (Avon, Conn.) played a strong role in the goal as she passed it to Rogers who then gave it to Masini.

Georgetown tied the game shortly into the second half at 38:24 when Helena Masiello scored with Megan Parsons gathering the assist.

Freshman Katie Hammaker (Ephrata, Pa.) made five of her seven saves in the second half to keep the Bears in the game before Miller's game-winning tally (68:34).

Rachel Skonecki of Georgetown made two saves in the contest.

The Hoyas held the lead in shots (12-9) and corners (9-3) in the game.

Next up, the Bears travel to Ivy League foe Harvard for their third conference game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 10. The match-up is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.

Field Hockey Defeats Dartmouth, 2-1, in Ivy League Action

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Freshman Ellie Seid (Larchmont, N.Y,) scored what proved to be the game-winning goal for Brown field hockey at 14:48 of the first half, for a 2-1 victory over Dartmouth in an Ivy League match-up on a windy Saturday afternoon at Goldberger Field. With the win, Brown improves to 4-5 on the season and 1-1 in the Ivy League. Dartmouth falls to 3-5 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

"We've been getting better every week and playing very consistently," said head coach Jill Reeve. "I'm happy we achieved a win today against a tough Dartmouth team."

All of the scoring in the game took place in a span of seven minutes in the first half, as Brown got on the board first at 7:39 with a penalty corner goal from senior Alexis Miller (Caldwell, N.J.). Seniors Emily Arciero (Avon, Conn.) and Anna Masini (Ann Arbor, Mich.) assisted on the tally.
