Mayor Elorza to Kick-off 2019 Arbor Day Tree Planting Activities in Providence

PROVIDENCE, RI – Mayor Jorge O. Elorza will join City Council President Sabina Matos; Councilwoman Mary Kay Harris; Wendy Nilsson, Director of Providence Parks Department; Cassie Tharinger, Director of the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program; Douglas Still, Providence City Forester; Katie Silberman, Associate Director of Community Relations for Brown University; volunteers and community partners for a ceremonial Arbor Day planting of nine shade trees along the streets around the Mattie Smith Tot Lot. The event celebrates the year-round efforts of the City and its partners to strengthen our urban forest and earn Providence’s status as a Tree City USA® community.
The ceremonial planting builds off the work of the Parks Department to renovate and improve green spaces across City neighborhoods, as well as the work of the Forestry Division and the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program to increase tree canopy and equitably distribute the benefits and impacts of urban trees throughout our city and community. Support for the tree planting comes from the Parks Department, the Providence Neighborhood Planting Program, and funds donated by Brown University to add trees in and around parks and playgrounds in low-canopy neighborhoods throughout Providence.
As part of Providence Neighborhood Planting Program’s spring 2019 tree planting schedule, 276 trees will be planted along streets throughout the City. For more information and a full planting schedule, please visit pnpp.org
