Fifth-Seeded Women’s Tennis Falls to Top-Seeded Williams in NESCAC Semifinals, 5-0

LEWISTON, Maine -- Top seed Williams College defeated No. 5 seed Wesleyan University 5-0 in the first women's semifinal Saturday morning at the 2016 NESCAC Women's Tennis Championship at Bates College.

The Ephs (17-3) will face the winner of the second semifinal between No. 2 Middlebury and No. 3 Amherst in Sunday's championship match. The match will be played indoors at 9 a.m. at the Portland Racquet and Fitness Club, due to Sunday's rainy forecast.

Williams swept doubles play, although it took nearly two hours to accomplish the feat. Williams' No. 2 duo comprising of Julia Cancio and Hannah Atkinson defeated Victoria Yu and Aashli Budhiraja in an extended tiebreaker, for a 9-8 (7) final. Williams' No. 3 duo of Maya Hart and Giulia McDonnell Nieto del Rio outlasted Wesleyan's Nicole McCann and Dasha Dubinski, 8-6, while at No. 1 doubles, Juli Raventos and Linda Shin downed Eudice Chong and Helen Klass-Warch, 8-5.

Williams made it 4-0 with a 6-1, 6-0 victory for Leah Bush over Dubinski at sixth singles. The Ephs ended the match when Shin finished off Klass-Warch 6-3, 6-1 at third singles, leaving four singles matches unfinished. Chong and Yu both had leads before the match ended. Chong was ahead 6-2, 3-4 in No. 1 singles and Yu led 6-3, 2-1 in No. 2 singles.

No. 8 Wesleyan Downs Bates, 9-0

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. – The eighth-ranked Wesleyan University women’s tennis team cruised to a 9-0 sweep in NESCAC action Tuesday night, defeating Bates College on the John Wood Memorial Tennis Courts.

RECORDS
Wesleyan: 5-4, 2-4 NESCAC
Bates: 4-12, 1-5 NESCAC

DOUBLES RESULTS
  • The No. 1 doubles duo of Eudice Chong ’18 and Aashli Budhiraja ’18 earned an 8-3 victory over Elizabeth Erbafina and Bella Stone.
  • In No. 2 doubles, Victoria Yu ’19 and Helen Klass-Warch ’18 cruised to an 8-1 win against Maisie Silverman and Kate Rosenthal.
  • Nicole MCann ’18 and Maddie James ’16 claimed an 8-5 win against Emma Blakeley and Emma Mattson.

SINGLES RESULTS

  • The Cardinals claimed singles play decisively.
  • Chong, Klass-Warch and Budhiraja all picked up wins from the No. 1, 2 and 3 positions, respectively. Chong won the first set 6-0 and had a 1-0 lead in the second set before the match was retired. Klass-Warch won 6-2, 6-3, and Budhiraja claimed victories of 6-2, 6-1.
  • McCann picked up a win in No. 4 singles by scores of 6-3, 6-2 over Kate Rosenthal, while Dasha Dubinsky ’18 defeated Olivia Voccola in No. 5 singles, 6-2, 6-2.
  • Ella Lindholm-Uzzi ’17 dropped her first 6-3 to Hannah Londoner in the No. 6 spot, but recovered with wins of 6-3 and 10-8 to earn the win.

UP NEXT

  • The Cardinals are back on the court Saturday, April 23 and will head to Colby College. The match is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
  • Bates returns to action Thursday, April 21 and will play non-conference opponent Babson on the road at a time to be determined.

Trinity Women's Tennis Beaten At Brandeis

Waltham, Mass. - Sophomore Vanja Babunski (Belgrade, Seria) won, 9-8, with first-year Zoe Lindbloom (Wayzata, Minn.) at No. 1 doubles and added a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 win at the top singles spot to account for both Trinity College points in a 7-2 women's tennis loss to the Brandeis University Judges this afternoon.  Trinity drops to 3-7 with its fifth defeat in a row, while the Judges up their season mark to 8-7.

Eighth-Ranked Wesleyan Women’s Tennis Earns 7-2 Win Over Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. – The 8th-ranked Wesleyan University women’s tennis team defeated NESCAC opponent Hamilton College Saturday morning, 7-2 at Hamilton’s Gray Tennis courts.

RECORDS
Wesleyan: 4-3, 1-3 NESCAC
Hamilton: 11-5, 0-4 NESCAC

DOUBLES RESULTS

  • Wesleyan swept doubles action, 3-0.
  • In No. 1 doubles, Eudice Chong ’18 and Aashli Budhiraja ’18 claimed an 8-2 victory over Jane Haffer and Lindsay Jadow.
  • No. 2 doubles featured an 8-1 win by Victoria Yu ’19 and Dasha Dubinsky ’18 against Claire Keyte and Samantha Weeks.
  • Helen Klass-Warch ’18 and Nicole McCann ’18 won decisively in No. 3 doubles, 8-0 over Emily Chan and Claudia Morse.

SINGLES RESULTS

  • Wesleyan won No. 1-4 singles to claim the 7-2 victory.
  • After a difficult first set in which Chong edged Haffer, 7-6 (5) in No. 1 singles, the sophomore responded with a 6-0 win in the second to claim the match.
  • Yu defeated Jadow in No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-3.
  • Klass-Warch won both sets, 6-4 against Winnie Tang in No. 3 singles, and Budhiraja claimed No. 4 singles over Keyte by scores of 6-4, 6-2.
  • McCann was narrowly edged in No. 5 singles against Jane Bary. After claiming the first set, 6-2, she dropped the second 7-6 before falling short in a thrilling set three, 16-14.

UP NEXT

  • Wesleyan returns to the courts tomorrow, April 17 and will play at No. 5 Amherst. The match is scheduled to start at 1 p.m.
  • The Continentals play later today against Le Moyne, slated for a 4 p.m. start.

No. 67 Women’s Tennis Clipped by No. 71 Cornell, 4-3

ITHACA, N.Y. – The No. 67 Brown women's tennis team was defeated 4-3 at No. 71 Cornell on Saturday at the Reis Tennis Center. After Brown captured the doubles point, Cornell won four singles matches to take the win. The Bears move to 1-2 in Ivy League competition while Cornell improves to 2-2.

Cornell won the first doubles match before junior Dayna Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) and sophomore Alyza Benotto (Los Angeles, Calif.) tied the score, 1-1, with a 6-3 win in first singles. Senior Ammu Mandalap (Princeton Junction, N.J.) and sophomore Maddie Stearns (Short Hills, N.J.) claimed the doubles point for the Bears with a 6-3 win in the third spot.

Freshman Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 win in sixth singles. Senior Hannah Camhi (Woodbury, N.Y.) then made it two-straight for Brown in singles play with a 6-2, 6-1 victory in third singles. Cornell next grabbed singles wins in the fifth, first and second spots and pushed the final match (fourth singles) to three sets and won, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, to take the match.

The Bears play again tomorrow (April 10) at No. 33 Columbia for a noontime match.

Brown Women’s Tennis Topples Florida Atlantic, 6-0

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The Brown women's tennis team cruised past Florida Atlantic on Tuesday with a 6-0 win. All of the Bears' victories came in singles play as doubles was called due to thunderstorms.

Junior Dayna Lord (Bloomfield, Conn.) took first singles in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, to get Brown started. Senior Hannah Camhi (Woodbury, N.Y.) followed in second singles, winning 6-2, 7-6 (4). Sophomore Maddie Stearsn (Short Hills, N.J.) proceeded in third singles, taking the victory in three sets (6-3, 3-6, 6-3). In fourth singles, Mariska Chamdani (Santa Clara, Calif.) fought to a 4-6, 6-3 (12-10) win. Freshman Katie Ta (Mission Viejo, Calif.) (6-1, 6-2) and senior Ammu Mandalap (Princeton Junction, N.J.) (6-0, 6-4) closed out the match with wins in fifth and sixth singles, respectively.

The Bears will begin Ivy League play and host No. 59 Princeton on Friday, April 1 (2:00 p.m.) and No. 69 Penn on Saturday, April 2 (2:00 p.m.).

RIC ROLLS PAST WORCESTER STATE, 9-0

Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College women’s tennis team used a complete team effort secure their ninth straight victory and fifth shutout as they defeated Worcester State, 9-0, in Little East Conference action played at the RIC Tennis Courts on Wednesday afternoon.
 
Doubles action saw the RIC (9-1, 5-0 LEC) tandem of sophomore Dayna Reilly (Swansea, MA) and junior partner Julie Reddy (Smithfield, RI) defeat WSU (5-7, 3-4 LEC) junior Shelby Jankins (West Brookfield, MA) and senior Megan Shepard (Middletown, CT), 8-2, at the No. 1 pairing.
