HOW IT HAPPENED • Plymouth State scored off the opening draw when senior attacker Megan Tingley (Natick, MA) found the back of the net just 11 seconds into the contest. The Panthers scored four times in the first 10 minutes and built a 10-0 advantage at halftime.   • PSU outshot RIC, 27-6, in the first half and also held advantages in ground balls, 19-9, and draw controls, 7-4.   • Senior attacker Sam Sullivan (Canton, MA) scored the last goal of the first half and the opening marker of the second frame as the Panthers increased their advantage to 13-0 with 21:33 left in the game.   • Apici broke up the shutout bid with an unassisted tally with 13:20 left in the contest. The visitors netted the next three to close out the win.   • Tingley finished with three goals and two assists for five points to go along with three draw controls. Sullivan also notched a hat trick with three goals and one assist for four points, while adding four caused turnovers. Six Panthers scored two or more goals in the win.   • Sophomore midfielder Sydney Dubois (Goffstown, NH) had two goals and one assist for three points and hauled in a team-best four draw controls and four ground balls.   • PSU senior goalkeeper Clarissa Foote (Weare, NH) made three saves without allowing a goal in the first half to pick up the win (5-3) before giving way to junior netminder Emilee Wargo (Madison, CT) for the second frame. Wargo made two saves.   • RIC junior goalkeeper Julia Eaton (Cumberland, RI) made 18 saves in the loss (1-6). Senior Jessica Trautman (Narragansett, RI) registered three caused turnovers and picked up four ground balls.   • Plymouth State held the advantage in shots, 41-11, ground balls, 31-19 and draw controls, 12-6.

HOW IT HAPPENED • RIC took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring on an error, while Rains was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and sophomore third baseman Ray Zincone (West Warwick, RI) was walked with the sacks full. • The hosts struck back quickly with three runs in the home half of the first. Designated hitter Zack Smith doubled in a pair and catcher Christian Va singled in the equalizer. • A Va RBI on an infield hit and a wild pitch allowed the Seahawks to take a 5-3 lead in the third inning. • Salve first baseman Alex Perry and Smith smacked RBI singles as part of a three-run fifth. Rains homered in the top of the sixth, but Perry belted a two-run homer as part of a four-run sixth to help the hosts end the game early.

BY THE NUMBERS • RIC scored four runs on five hits and committed four errors. • The Seahawks scored 12 runs on 11 hits and committed just one miscue. • Zincone knocked in one run. • Perry went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBI. Dudley, Mass.—Senior defender Alasondra Apici (Providence, RI), while classmate midfielder Jessica Trautman (Narragansett, RI) netted three, but it wouldn't be enough as the Rhode Island College women's lacrosse team dropped a 19-12 decision at Nichols on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED • RIC freshman midfielder Madison McKenna (Cumberland, RI) notched one goal and added four assists. • Freshman midfielder Lily Fortin (Warwick, RI) also notched five points with two goals and three assists in the setback for the Anchorwomen. • Sophomore attacker Miranda Smith (Methuen, MA) paced Nichols with four goals and one assist, while senior midfielder Lindsay O'Connell (Danvers, MA) added four goals in the victory. • Junior attacker Kirsten Sullivan (Arlington, MA) posted three goals and added a pair of assists in the win for the Bison. • Nichols jumped out to an early, 7-2, advantage before RIC chipped away at the lead and closed the gap to 7-4 on a free position goal by Fortin with 11:03 left in the first half. • The Bison took a 9-6 lead heading into halftime. • RIC kept the deficit to within three when three straight goals from Trautman put the score at 12-9 with just over 20 minutes left in the contest. • Nichols then tallied four straight during a two minute stretch to pull ahead 16-9 before taking the 19-12 victory. • Junior goalkeeper Julia Eaton (Cumberland, RI) made 20 saves in the setback for RIC, while sophomore Emily Eagan (Hingham, MA) notched 10 stops in the victory for Nichols.

ANCHORWOMEN SWEEP WHEELOCK

Providence, R.I.--Rhode Island College junior pitcher Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) went4-for-5 with five runs scored, two doubles and three RBI, while also hurling a game one four-hit shutout, as the Anchorwomen swept Wheelock (6-0, 19-0) in a doubleheader played at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Senior third baseman Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT) contributed a sacrifice fly and freshman right fielder Erica Fluskey (Trumbull, CT) doubled in a run.   • Gough helped her own cause with an RBI double in the third. Junior catcher Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) knocked in one in the fourth and Fluskey chipped in with an RBI double in the sixth to cap the game’s offensive output.   • Gough earned the win (2-1), allowing just four hits and striking out 11. Wheelock freshman pitcher Kathy Ochoa (El Paso, TX) took the loss (0-7), allowing six runs (four earned) on 10 hits. RIC senior shortstop Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) went 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.

HOW IT HAPPENED: GAME TWO • The hosts wasted no time in the nightcap as RIC plated four runs in the bottom of the first. Schott doubled in a pair, Gough notched an RBI infield single and senior first baseman Kelsey Wood (North Dighton, MA) picked up an RBI double.   • Venturini tripled in the second to give RIC a 5-0 advantage. With one down in the third, the RIC offense put up 10 runs on the visitors and then pushed across four more in the fourth to secure the win. Junior pitcher Erica Fleming (Sagamore Beach, MA) allowed just four hits in the shutout victory (2-1). Wheelock freshman starter Taylor MacDonald (Weare, NH) took the loss (0-3).

BY THE NUMBERS • Venturini went 5-for-7 with five runs scored, a double, one triple and three RBI on the day. Wood was RIC’s top run producer in the twinbill, going 4-for-7 with two runs scored, two doubles and five RBI.

Providence, R.I.--Worcester State senior midfielder Jackie Connors (Ashland, MA) scored a pair of goals and added eight assists, while junior attacker Alaina Martin (East Longmeadow, MA) scored six goals and added two assists, as the Lancers topped Rhode Island College, 21-10, in non-conference women’s lacrosse action played at the RIC Lacrosse Field on Thursday night.

RIC (4-8) sophomore defender Taylor Theriault (Lincoln, RI) notched her first career point with an assist on a second half goal.

Providence, R.I.--Sophomore right fielder Edward Apice (North Kingstown, RI) went 4-for-5 with four home runs, four runs scored and seven RBI as Rhode Island College crushed Framingham State, 19-10, at Anchorman Field on Thursday afternoon.

The Anchormen (12-16-2) also got a strong performance from junior designated hitter Austin Barry (North Kingstown), who also went 4-for-5 with three runs scored, four RBI, a double and a home run.

HEIDEL AND BRADLEY NOTCH HAT TRICKS IN, 22-9, LOSS TO UMASS DARTMOUTH

North Dartmouth, Mass.--UMass Dartmouth used a pair of 11-goal halves to race to a 22-9 victory over Rhode Island College in Little East Conference women’s lacrosse action played at Cressy Field on Tuesday night.

The Corsairs (7-5, 3-1 LEC) opened a 1-0 lead with a goal by junior attacker Catrina Longo (Billerica, MA) just two minutes into the game. RIC (4-7, 0-4 LEC) knotted the game following an unassisted tally by junior midfielder Betsy Heidel (Warwick, RI), but the Corsairs would take control down the stretch, outscoring the Anchorwomen, 10-5, over the remainder of the half to enter the break with an 11-6 lead.

RIC freshman goalie Julia Eaton (Cumberland, RI) stopped 11 shots in the first half with her counterpart, freshman Kaitlyn Burchill (Bridgewater, MA), turning aside three in the half.

The Corsairs blasted open a close game, rattling off the first five goals of the half to make the score 16-6 with 20:41 remaining in the game. The Anchorwomen scored three of the next five goals before the Corsairs finished the half on a 4-0 run to give the game its 22-9 final.

Eaton finished with 19 saves in the loss (4-7), with Burchill stopping three in the victory (7-5).

Longo led all scorers with five goals and one assist for six points. Senior attacker Colleen Kane (Arlington, MA), sophomore midfielder Erin Kish (Littleton, MA) and sophomore defender Leah Douty (Framingham, MA) each scored four goals in the victory.

Heidel and freshman attacker Tess Bradley (Tiverton, RI) led the Anchorwomen attack with three goals apiece.

UMD held a 55-14 advantage in shots, 23-9 edge in draw controls, 39-17 advantage in ground balls and were plus-seven in turnovers.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Worcester State on Thursday, April 21 (6:30 p.m.).

ANCHORWOMEN SPLIT WITH CORSAIRS

Providence, R.I.-Rhode Island College freshman shortstop Kelsey Burgess (North Providence, RI) smacked a walk-off three-run double to lead the Anchorwomen to a game one victory as RIC split a Little East Conference doubleheader with UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday night at the Dayna A. Bazar Softball Complex.

The Corsairs (22-11, 5-3, LEC) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one as senior first baseman Shannon Orton (Swansea, MA) led off with a single, was sacrificed to second came home on sophomore pitcher Hannah Smith’s (Attleboro, MA) RBI single.

Smith kept the Anchorwomen (12-14, 3-5 LEC) off the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth. Junior center fielder Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) reached on a fielder’s choice and moved up to second on a throwing error. Sophomore first baseman Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT) followed by evening the game, 1-1, with an RBI single.

UMD came right back in the top of the seventh to regain its advantage. Sophomore shortstop Emily Colton (Kingston, MA) led off and was hit by a pitch. After being sacrificed to second, she advanced to third on a passed ball and came across on junior second baseman Marissa Spinuzzi’s (Fair Lawn, NJ) sacrifice fly. Orton later scored on a wild pitch after doubling to put the visitors up by a pair, 3-1, with three outs to go.

The Anchorwomen stormed back in the bottom of the seventh to walk-off with the win. With one down, sophomore left fielder Sarah Molin (Seymour, CT) doubled and advanced to third on freshman catcher Emma Simmons’ (Saunderstown, RI) bunt single. Simmons stole second, and after a pop out, junior right fielder Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) drew a walk. Burgess cleared the bases with a double to right field to win the game, 4-3.

Senior pitcher Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) picked up the win (5-3), allowing three runs on seven hits in a complete game effort. Smith took the loss (11-6), allowing four runs on six hits in 6.2 innings of work.

UMD took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second in game two when freshman first baseman Briana Flaherty (Franklin, MA) reached on a fielder’s choice and later scored on sophomore left fielder Rebecca Field’s (Brentwood, TN) two-out RBI double.

Orton allowed just two hits over five innings of work to keep the Corsairs ahead by the slim margin. The Anchorwomen started their comeback in the bottom of the sixth when DiScuillo led off with a walk, moved over to second on a ground out and advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two down, Duvall brought in the tying run with an RBI single to third base. A Corsair error off a freshman first baseman Cristin Chiaverini (Pawtucket, RI) fly ball allowed Duvall to come all the way around to score and put the Anchorwomen on top, 2-1.

The Corsairs came back with the tying run in the top of seventh as a RIC error and a single put runners on second and third with two down. Field flied out to right field to bring in Orton with the equalizer and force extra innings.

UMD took the lead for the third time in the game in the top of the eighth when freshman center fielder Maddie O’Gryzek (Norfolk, MA) started off the frame with a bunt single and moved up on a Colton single. The duo were sacrificed to second and third and O’Gryzek trotted home on a wild pitch. Spinuzzi dealt a big blow with an RBI triple to bring in Colton and give the visitors a 4-2 win.

Orton picked up the win (11-5), allowing just two runs on four hits to go along with eight strikeouts. RIC freshman pitcher Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) suffered the loss (5-4), allowing four runs on seven hits in eight innings of work.

CORSAIRS CLIP ANCHORMEN IN MID-WEEK LITTLE EAST CONFERENCE CLASH

North Dartmouth, Mass.-- Sophomore right fielder Edward Apice (North Kingstown, RI) picked up two hits, while junior first baseman TJ Lynch (South Kingstown, RI) drove in the only run, as Rhode Island College fell to UMass Dartmouth, 13-1 (7 innings) in a mid-week Little East Conference clash played at Corsairs Field.

The Corsairs (11-15, 3-4 LEC) used an eight-run second inning to build a lead they would never relinquish as they cruised past the Anchormen (11-16, 1-6 LEC). UMD tacked on two runs in the third and three more in the fifth to end the game early via the 10-run rule. Junior first baseman TJ Lynch

A solo homer by Lynch in the third was the only offense RIC could muster in the loss. Lynch went 1-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI, while Apice went 2-for-3.

The Anchormen’s defense was tagged for seven errors on the day. Sophomore starter Daniel Greaves (Warwick, RI) took the loss (1-2), allowing 10 runs (four earned) on eight hits in 3.0 innings of work.

Four Corsairs registered multiple hits on the day, led by junior left fielder Taylor Cacciola (West Greenwich, RI) who went 3-for-5 with a run scored, five RBI and a double. Senior starter Aaron Chouinard (Swansea, MA) picked up the win (2-1), allowing one run on five hits to go along with eight strikeouts in a complete game effort.

APICE AND LYNCH COMBINE TO LEAD RIC PAST SPRINGFIELD, 15-6

Providence, R.I.—Sophomore right fielder Edward Apice (North Kingstown, RI) and junior first baseman TJ Lynch (North Kingstown, RI) combined for 10 RBI as Rhode Island College cruised past Springfield, 15-6, at Anchorman Field on Monday afternoon.

Apice went 3-for-3 with three runs scored, six RBI and a homer, while Lynch went 4-for-5 with four runs scored, four RBI a triple and a homer, to lead the Anchormen (11-15-2).

The Pride (10-18-1) jumped out to an early, 2-0, lead in the top of the first when freshman shortstop Evan Moore (Portsmouth, RI) singled and then scored on a two-out homer by junior first baseman Mike Jamieson (New Fairfield, CT).

The Anchormen tied the game up in the bottom of the second when junior left fielder Austin Barry (North Kingstown, RI) singled and Apice was hit by a pitch. The duo moved up to second and third after a wild pitch and scored on freshman catcher Jake Petrin’s (Lincoln, RI) two-out, two-run single.

In the third, the visitors tacked on three runs to go up by three, 5-2. With the bases loaded and no one out, senior designated hitter Corey Wilcox (Uncasville, CT) hit a sacrifice fly to bring in one. The Pride brought in two more, one on ground ball that resulted in a double play and another on an Anchorman error.

RIC pulled within a run, 5-4, in the third with a two-run double by Apice that brought in Barry and Lynch.

SC sophomore third baseman Kyle Allen (Westerly, RI) tripled and scored on senior left fielder Colin King’s (Berlin, CT) RBI single in the fourth.

The hosts used a six-run fifth inning to jump out to a 10-6 lead. Sophomore second baseman Shaun Vigeant (Coventry, RI) singled and classmate center fielder Brad Douglas (Wakefield, RI) walked to get the rally started. Lynch smacked an RBI single, Douglas scored on an error, Apice knocked in a pair with an RBI single and junior third baseman Scott Linnane (North Kingstown, RI) ripped a two-run homer in the frame.

Apice helped put the game out of reach with a two-run bomb, after a Lynch triple, in the sixth. Lynch added a three-run homer in the seventh to close out the game’s offense.

RIC freshman reliever Justin Conti (Lincoln, RI) picked up his first collegiate win (1-0), allowing one run on three hits in two innings of work. Senior Kory Lawrence (Woonsocket, RI) and junior Jake Roy (Seekonk, MA) hurled four innings of scoreless relief to close out the game.

Jamieson went 2-for-4 with a run scored, two RBI and a homer for the Pride. Sophomore Jack Weinberger (Sunapee, NH) took the loss (0-3), allowing nine runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings of work.

WESTERN CONNECTICUT DEFEATS RIC, 19-5

Providence, R.I.-Western Connecticut junior attacker Meaghan Gustafson (Newington, CT) scored a pair of goals and added two assists to lead the Colonials past Rhode Island College, 19-5, in Little East Conference women’s lacrosse action played at the RIC Lacrosse Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Colonials (4-6, 1-1 LEC) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first 2:35 of the game, keyed by a pair of goals by junior attacker Destinee Carey (New Milford, CT) and a goal and an assist from freshman midfielder Lauren Bradshaw (Bethel, CT).

RIC SPLITS WITH LANCERS

Worcester, Mass.--Rhode Island College freshman catcher Emma Simmons (Saunderstown, RI) went a combined 2-for-6 with three runs scored to lead the softball team to a split in non-conference double-header action against Worcester State on Thursday afternoon.

The Anchorwomen (11-9) took game one by a score of 6-1 before the Lancers (12-13-1) won game two by a score of 5-4 in eight innings.

In game one, RIC jumped out early in the first inning, with an RBI sacrifice fly from sophomore shortstop Nicole Venturini (North Scituate, RI) scoring Simmons for the first run. RIC was able to tack on one more run in the top of the frame when sophomore first baseman Chelsea Schott (Meriden, CT) smacked an RBI double that scored junior pitcher Lauren DiScuillo (East Providence, RI) to make the score 2-0 Anchorwomen.

Worcester State got one back in the home half of the third inning when senior right fielder Taylor Daniels (Norco, CA) scored on a RIC error to make the score 2-1 for the visitors. Venturini struck again in the top half of the fifth inning, knocking a double to center field that scored Simmons to make it 3-1 RIC.

The Anchorwomen put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh inning, scoring three runs in the stanza to give the game its 6-1 final. DiScuillio, Simmons and freshman right fielder Michela DeAngelis (North Providence, RI) all scored on a WSU error and DiScuillo shut the door in the bottom half of the inning.

DiScuillo went 7.0 innings, allowing one unearned run on seven hits, while striking out three in the victory (2-3). Sophomore pitcher Julie Melanson (Gardner, MA) pitched 7.0 innings, allowing six runs, three earned, on nine hits, while striking out five in the loss (2-2).

In the nightcap, the Anchorwomen struck first again, with senior left fielder Katelyn McCaughey (Warwick, RI) notching an RBI single that scored freshman pitcher Briana Gough (West Warwick, RI) to make the score 1-0. RIC extended its advantage in the top of the third, with Venturini and junior center fielder Lauren Duvall (East Greenwich, RI) each scoring unearned runs to push the RIC lead to 3-0.

The Lancers struck back in the home half of the fifth inning, scoring two runs to make the score 3-2. Senior shortstop Hayley Terry (Bellingham, MA) got the offense started, notching an RBI sacrifice fly to right field that scored junior third baseman Rachel Couto (Chelmsford, MA). WSU sophomore first baseman Sydney Despres (Sterling, MA) halved the deficit when she notched an RBI double to center field.

RIC scored a run in the top of the sixth inning with Venturini picking up a bases loaded walk to push the advantage to two, 4-2, before the hosts staged their comeback. Worcester State picked up a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning on a two-RBI single by Couto to knot the game at four apiece.

Following a scoreless seventh, the Lancers were able to strike for the game-winning run in the eighth when Terry was able to smack a bases loaded, two-out RBI to earn the split.

Gough went 7.2 innings, allowing five runs, four earned on 14 hits, while striking out five in the loss (5-2). Junior Kayla Humphrey (Wallingford, CT) went 8.0 innings, allowing four runs, one earned, on seven hits while striking out three in the victory (5-1).

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play with a doubleheader at Keene State on Saturday, April 16 (1 p.m.).
