Trinity Men's Lacrosse Defeated on the Road at Bates

Lewiston, Maine - The Trinity College Bantams dropped a 15-7 New England Small Conference Athletic Conference (NESCAC) men's lacrosse matchup on Saturday afternoon at Garcelon Field to the Bates College Bobcats. Trinity falls to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play while the Bobcats improve to 3-3 on the year and 1-2 in league play. The Bantams return to action on Monday night for a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Emmanuel College.

Bates got a game-high five goals from Matt Chlastawa and three more by Clarke Jones to lead the way for the Bobcats who took a 3-1 lead after the first quarter and never looked back. The Bantams got goals from seven different players while junior Ben Knaus (Ross, Calif.) tied a game-high six ground balls and classmate Scott Morgan (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and senior Matthew Barker (Sudbury, Mass.) both collected five. 

Trinity drew first blood as senior Brian Crowe (Cranbury, N.J.) connected with the back of the net off an assist from junior Teddy Myers (Washington, D.C.) on the game's opening faceoff. The Bobcats answered, however, with three consecutive scores, two by Chlastawa and one by Jones, to take a 3-1 lead after the first quarter. Neither team managed to get on the board in the second quarter until the Bobcats added their fourth goal of the game with just 26 seconds left before the half when Chlastawa assisted on a Curtis Knapton goal to give the hosts a 4-1 lead at the half.

Bates scored four-straight to start the second half and open up a commanding, 8-1 lead with 6:51 left to go in the third. Sophomore Morty Fearey (Duxbury, Mass.) ended the Bobcat run with a goal at the 5:20 mark in the third quarter before classmate Andrew Collins (Brookfield, Conn.) found netting just three minutes later to cut the deficit to 8-3. Max Breschi scored for Bates with just a second left to end the quarter and put Bates ahead, 9-3 as the two sides entered the fourth.

The Bobcats scored the first five goals of the final quarter to take a commanding, 14-3 lead with 11:18 showing on the clock. Knaus and rookie Drew Kozub (Hopkinton, Mass.) got two back for the Bantams before Max DeLaMater (Irvington, N.Y.) made it a 14-6 game with 3:03 left to play. Bates' defense kept the Bantams from clawing back as Jones scored a man-up goal with 2:24 left to give Bates a 15-6 lead before Myers netted his first goal of the game with less than two minutes left to account for the 15-7 final score.
