Brown University Women's Water Polo Falls to No. 14 Long Beach State, No. 12 Hartwick

LONG BEACH and COMMERCE, Calif. – Continuing its California trip, Brown University women's water polo fell to No. 14 Long Beach State University, 10-4, and to No. 12 Hartwick College, 13-8, on Thursday at the Lindgren Aquatic Center and Brenda Villa Aquatic Center respectively.
Facing a pair of top-15 opponents during their eight-day, nine-game West Coast swing, the Bears (9-12, 0-1 CWPA) dropped the decision to the 49ers (10-11) in their first game before taking a setback against the Hawks (25-5, 2-0 CWPA) in their Collegiate Water Polo Association opener.
Junior Carmen Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.) scored three goals against Hartiwck while fellow junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) tallied 10 steals and seven ejections drawn between the two games and added two goals and three assists vs. the Hawks.
Next, Brown concludes its California trip on Saturday, Mar. 31 with games against Occidental (5:00 p.m. ET) and Cal Lutheran (7:30 p.m. ET).
Game 1 – No. 14 Long Beach State 10, Brown 4
LONG BEACH, Calif. – Senior Jessica Heilman and freshman Riley Hughes each scored two goals, but Brown fell to No. 14 Long Beach State, 10-4, on Thursday afternoon in its first game of the day.
The Bears outscored the 49ers, 4-2, over the game's final 16:24 after the hosts opened the game with an 8-0 lead.
Heilman (Menlo Park, Calif.) added three steals and two ejections drawn to her two goals while junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) tallied six steals and three ejections drawn.
Junior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) posted two steals and two ejections drawn, freshman Alli Schaum (San Rafael, Calif.) made two steals, and freshman Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) compiled an assist, a steal, a field block, and an ejection drawn.
Senior goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) blocked five shots.
LBSU took a 5-0 edge at the end of the first quarter and extended the margin to 8-0 with 50 seconds left in the second stanza. A goal from Hughes (Evanston, Ill.) with 24 seconds to go in the half Brown brought within 8-1 at the break.
Hughes initiated the second half's scoring, cutting the margin to 8-2, before the 49ers netted the third quarter's only other two goals to pull ahead 10-2. In the fourth quarter, Heilman found the back of the net at the 6:18 and 3:30 marks.

Game 2 – No. 12 Hartwick 13, Brown 8
COMMERCE, Calif. – Junior Carmen Rosas netted a hat trick as Brown fell to No. 12 Hartwick, 13-8, in its CWPA opener on Thursday night in the first NCAA women's water polo game played at the Brenda Villa Aquatic Center.
In their second game of the day, the Bears closed the game on a 3-0 run after trailing 6-1 at the end of the first quarter and 13-5 in the fourth quarter.
Alongside the three goals from Rosas (Schaumburg, Ill.), junior McKenna Miller (Danville, Calif.) tallied two goals, three assists, four steals, and four ejections drawn.
Freshmen Kaitlyn Cook (Los Gatos, Calif.) and Carissa Perez (Pico Rivera, Calif.) each posted a goal and two ejections drawn while junior Maigrie McDougal (Sacramento, Calif.) tacked on a goal and an assist. Junior Allison Woo (Arcadia, Calif.) and sophomore Lexi Atwell (La Jolla, Calif.) made two steals apiece.
Senior goalie Marisol Dakan (Pasadena, Calif.) stopped seven shots and dished out an assist.
McDougal tied the score at 1-1 early in the first quarter before the Hawks closed the period on a 5-0 run to take a 6-1 lead at the end of one. Rosas brought Brown within 6-2 before Hartwick took a 7-2 edge into the intermission.
The Hawks staked themselves to a 10-2 advantage before Miller scored two goals in the third quarter to bring the margin to 11-4 heading to the final period.
Cook opened the fourth quarter's scoring prior to a pair of goals from the Hawks, which made the score 13-5. Inside of the final four minutes, Rosas scored twice and Perez converted once as Brown ended the game on a 3-0 run.
