Balanced effort leads W&J to dominant 7-0 victory over Sage

DANBURY, CONN. - Junior Samantha Burns (New Milford, Conn.) scored her first goal of the season and cut the Western Connecticut State University field hockey team's deficit in half, but it was not enough to hold off Worcester State University in Little East Conference action on Saturday afternoon.  The Lancers defeated WestConn, 3-1 to improve to 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the league.

in front of the WSU cage minder Sam Gastonguay (Ashburnham, Mass.).  The visiting goal was able to turn away one attempt, but Burns mopped up the ricochet.

WestConn drops to 4-6 overall and 3-4 in the league.

The Lancers got on the scoreboard in the 16th minute when Hope Makey (Clinton, Mass.) scored her second goal of the season after a feed across the crease from Emily Floury (Warren, Mass.).

Nine minutes later Floury added her fifth goal of the season to put the visitors up, 2-0.  She was set up with an assist from Karalyn Jones (Wilbraham, Mass.).

Worcester State added an insurance goal with 50 seconds remaining in the final stanza when Molly Cutting deposited her third marker of the year.

Junior Kayla Hnasko (Raritan, N.J.) made seven saves in goal for WestConn while Gastonguay turned away six WestConn shot attempts.

WestConn travels to non-league foe Elms College on Thursday, October 14 for a 7 pm start.

The Lancers host Castleton University on Tuesday, October 12.  Game time s slated for 7 pm.
