Coast Guard Academy's Sanderson Scores Hat Trick in NEWMAC Loss

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Freshman Carter Sanderson registered her first career hat trick, but Coast Guard fell to Wellesley 17-5 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon.

With the loss the Bears fall to 2-11 and 0-6 in conference play while the Blue move over .500 on the season with a 7-6 record and are now 2-3 in the NEWMAC.

With her three goals Sanderson is now second on the team with 11 goals and third with 12 points. Sophomore Daria McKenna and freshman Anne McGoldrick each tallied a goal as well for Coast Guard. McKenna leads the team in both goals (15) and points (17).

Peterson had 4 goals and one assists while classmate Mary Lemay had a hat trick of her own.

Down two goals just under five minutes into the game, Sanderson used a nifty spin move in front of the goal to get free of her defender and score her first goal of the game making the score 2-1 in the early going.

The Blue however took control from then on scoring seven straight and 10 of the final 11 goals of the half for a 12-2 lead going into the second half.

The Bears got three back in the second half, and held Wellesley to five before falling to the Blue 17-5.

Sophomore Angel Fay (2-11) made sevens saves on 24 shots faced. Fay leads the NEWMAC with 126 saves on the season. She is two saves away from breaking her program record of 127 saves she set in the 2015 inaugural season.

Freshman Chloe Tucker made one save on six shots faced for her first win of the season (1-0).

Coast Guard is back in action on Wednesday, April 20 when they travel to Babson for a midweek conference show down. Game time is 4:00 pm.
