Bears Down Bucs in NEWMAC Action

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. - Down a goal at halftime, Coast Guard came roaring back in the second half, outscoring Mass. Maritime 7-2 and taking the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory 12-8 Wednesday night.

With the win the Bears improve to 10-5 overall and 3-3 in conference play while the Buccaneers fall to 5-11 on the season and 1-5 in the conference.

Beavers Top Bears in NEWMAC Action

BABSON PARK, Mass.— Babson topped Coast Guard Academy in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) women's lacrosse action on Wednesday afternoon at MacDowell Field 18-0.

Coast Guard slips to 2-12 overall and 0-7 in the NEWMAC while Babson recorded its sixth consecutive win. The Beavers are now 10-3 overall and 6-0 in conference play.
 
Sophomore Angel Fay made five of her six saves in the first half to go along with two ground balls and two caused turnovers for the Bears.

Junior goalkeeper Stevie Burger made two saves to post her first career shutout.

The Beavers finished with a 31-2 edge in shots, won 14-of-19 draw controls and went 11-for-11 on clears.
 
Both teams return to action on Saturday as Babson hosts Springfield at 1 p.m., while Coast Guard takes on Smith at 12 p.m.

Coast Guard Academy's Sanderson Scores Hat Trick in NEWMAC Loss

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Freshman Carter Sanderson registered her first career hat trick, but Coast Guard fell to Wellesley 17-5 in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action Saturday afternoon.

With the loss the Bears fall to 2-11 and 0-6 in conference play while the Blue move over .500 on the season with a 7-6 record and are now 2-3 in the NEWMAC.

With her three goals Sanderson is now second on the team with 11 goals and third with 12 points. Sophomore Daria McKenna and freshman Anne McGoldrick each tallied a goal as well for Coast Guard. McKenna leads the team in both goals (15) and points (17).

Bears Fall to Nationally Ranked MIT

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard fell to MIT, ranked 22nd in the nation, 11-0 and 10-3 in NEWMAC action Friday afternoon at Nitchman Field.

Game One: 22 MIT (20-5, 10-0) 11 Coast Guard (8-23, 1-9) 0
The Bears were held hitless until the seventh inning as the Engineers took game one of the double header 11-0.

Freshman Hayden Short had the only hit for Coast Guard. Sophomore Emma Hvozdovich was the only other base runner for the Bears as she earned a walk.

MIT was led by sophomore Jasmin Joseph who was 4-5 with two doubles, four RBI's and three runs

Melampy, Phillips Lead Bears Past Springfield

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mike Melampy and Jack Phillips each won their singles matches and teamed to win at  #3 doubles leading Coast Guard to a 5-4 win over Springfield in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) match.

Melampy and Phillips posted an 8-3 win at #3 doubles while seniors Mark Guentert and Weston Fortna were 8-2 winners at #1 doubles as the Bears won two of the three doubles matches.

In singles action, John Hu was a 6-0, 6-4 winner at #4, Melampy won 6-4, 6-3 at #5 and Phillips

Bears Earn Gritty Win

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard came back from three goals down to earn a nonconference win over Plymouth State Wednesday afternoon at Cadet Memorial Field.

With the win the Bears improve to 8-3 on the season while the Panthers drop to 2-8.

Senior Kyle Carosotto scored his first two goals of the season while junior Blaise Curtis also scored two including the eventual game winner. Senior Louis DePaolis added two points with a goal and an assist. DePaolis is fourth in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) with 22 goals on the season.

Plymouth State was led by seniors Phil Pichel and Cody Carlson who each had a goal and an assist.

Red Hot Serna Leads Bears to Third Straight Win

WESTFIELD Mass. --  Sophomore Zach Serna continued his hot hitting by delivering a two-out RBI single in the eighth to break a 7-7 tie leading the Bears to an 8-7 win over Westfield State in a non-conference game.

Serna had three hits for the third straight game and he is 9 for his last 11 to increase hit team leading batting average to an even .400 leading the Bears to three straight wins improving to 11-13 overall. Westfield State drops to 12-11 on the year.

Coast Guard struck first in the first when Serna singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

Westfield State took the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth before the Bears erupted for four runs in the fifth.

In the fifth, Coast Guard scored its first two runs on wild pitches before an RBI triple by freshmanWill Stephens, who would also score on a wild pitch for the 5-2 lead.

Westfield State came right back with five in the fifth with the big hit being a three-run double by Dan Whigham as the Owls took a 7-5 lead.

The Bears got one run in the sixth on an RBI fielder's choice by freshman Luke Thompson.

In the eighth, junior Timbo Duncan led off with a single, stole second and score on an RBI single by Thompson to tie the game 7-7. Thompson moved to third on a single by senior Mark Behne before Serna's single gave the Bears the eventual winning run.

The Owls threatened in the home half of the eighth loading the bases by freshman Jack Brandt got a strikeout and double play ball to end the threat.

Stephens came on in the ninth and got all three batters to fly out to right field for his first career save.

Freshman Dan Finn (2-1) got the win in relief as he worked 2 2/3 allowing three hits and an earned run while walking four and fanning two.

Thompson, Stevens and senior Ed Lazowski each had two hits for Coast Guard as the Bears finished with 13 hits in the win.

Bears Earn First NEWMAC Win of the Season

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Senior Justin Huemme scored with 3:31 to go in the first overtime, leading Coast Guard (7-3, 1-1) to a 8-7 victory over Clark (8-1, 1-1) in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) competition.

Huemme had two goals giving him 17 on the season while freshman Jack Pope had a game high four points with three goals and one assist which was on Huemme's game winning goal. Freshman Benner Geurtsen also tallied a goal and an assist.

The Cougars were led by sophomore Will Mandracchia who scored a team high three goals.

Short Has Big Day as Bears Sweep Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Freshman Hayden Short was 5 for 6 with two doubles, a homer and seven RBI's leading Coast Guard to a doubleheader sweep of host Mitchell. The Bears won the opener 8-3 and the nightcap 9-7 games played with Coast Guard as the home team.

The Bears snapped a nine-game slide to improve to 7-15 on the season while Mitchell drops to 2-14 overall.

Short was 3 for 3 with a homer, two runs scored and four RBI's while senior Sarah Sorensen went the distance allowing seven hits and two earned runs while walking two and fanning four to improve to 4-12 on the season.

Mitchell struck first as freshman Suzanne Vachon led off with a triple and scored on a throwing error in the top of the first.

Coast Guard scored twice in the home half of the first on a two-run double by sophomore Casey Cruzpino.

The Mariners tied the game 2-2 in the second on an RBI single by senior Jenny Groman.

The Bears took the lead for good in the third on a sacrifice fly by sophomore Emily Hvozdovich
