Bears Fall to Nationally Ranked MIT

NEW LONDON, Conn. - Coast Guard fell to MIT, ranked 22nd in the nation, 11-0 and 10-3 in NEWMAC action Friday afternoon at Nitchman Field.

Game One: 22 MIT (20-5, 10-0) 11 Coast Guard (8-23, 1-9) 0
The Bears were held hitless until the seventh inning as the Engineers took game one of the double header 11-0.

Freshman Hayden Short had the only hit for Coast Guard. Sophomore Emma Hvozdovich was the only other base runner for the Bears as she earned a walk.

MIT was led by sophomore Jasmin Joseph who was 4-5 with two doubles, four RBI's and three runs
scored. Senior Tori Jensen was also 4-5 with a double, two RBI's and a run scored.

Coast Guard was only down 3-0 after four innings but were unable to muster any offense as they only had one base runner through the first six innings. MIT pulled away in the final three innings putting up eight runs.

Senior Sarah Sorensen (5-17) allowed 11 runs, nine earned, on 17 hits striking out one and walking two.

Senior Alexandra Marshall (13-4) pitched five scoreless innings, striking out nine and giving up no hits. Freshman Amber VanHemel pitched the final two innings allowing one hit and striking out three.

Marshall has been the best pitcher in the NEWMAC this season as she is in the conference first in ERA (0.65), Strikeouts (140) and wins (13.)

Game Two: 22 MIT (21-5, 11-0) 10 Coast Guard (8-24, 1-10) 3
Coast Guard had an early three run lead in game two but could not hang on as MIT came from behind for a 10-3 win.

Short went 2-4 with a run scored and a RBI while freshman Allyson Holfinger was 2-2 with a run scored and a RBI as well. Freshman Sharaya Simco was 1-1 with a RBI.

Short in her first season has been one of the top hitters in the conference as she is fourth in the NEWMAC with 31 RBI's and is eighth in batting average (.431). Her .521 on base percentage is first in the NEWMAC.

Jensen did the majority of the damage for the Engineers, going 2-3 with two home runs, five RBI's and two runs scored. Junior Monica Shifflet was 2-5 with three RBI's and one run scored while sophomore Amanda Lee went 3-5 with two runs scored.

The Bears did all their scoring in the first inning as Hvozdovich reached on a error and advanced to second with the first at bat of the game. Two batters later, Short singled up the middle bring in Hvozdovich. Short advanced to second on a wild pitch and then was brought in by Holfinger who also singled up the middle. Simco completed the three run inning by once again singling up the middle and plating Holfinger.

MIT went on to tie the game in the top of the third and take the lead in the fourth for good on their way to their 17th straight win.

Sophomore Emily Dow (1-2) pitched four innings giving up six runs, three earned, on 10 hits and striking out three. Sorensen came into the game in relief, pitching the final three innings and allowing four runs on five hits and striking out one.

Sophomore Deanna Delgado earned the start in game two but was chased early, pitching only two thirds of an inning and allowing three runs on three hits and striking out one. Freshman Ravenne Nasser (5-1) relieved Delgado going 5.1 innings and allowing no runs on five hits and striking out seven. Freshman Amber VanHamel pitched the final innings giving up no runs, no hits and striking out two.
