NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Coast Guard Academy men's basketball team has named seniors Kevin Alvarez, Mark Krebs and Ricky Rodriguez as tri-captains for the 2015-16 season.
The Bears, who will begin practice today, will open the season on Saturday Nov. 14th at Roger Williams at 3 p.m. Coast Guard will host Salve Regina in the home opener on Nov. 18th at 7 p.m.
"All three guys care greatly about the program," said Coast Guard head
coach Kevin Jaskiewicz. "They each bring a unique skill set to the
position and will do a great job leading us this year."
Alvarez, a guard, led the team with 13.2 points and 6.1 per game last
season. The Bears return three of their top four scorers last season
including Rodriguez, who averaged 5.9 points per game.
The non-conference portion of the schedule will be highlighted by a trip to the Tampa Bay Shootout on Dec. 29th and 30th where the Bears will play DePauw in the opening round at 5 p.m.
The Bears will once again co-host the Conn. College/Coast Guard tournament on Saturday, December 5th and Sunday, December 6th.
The Bears will face Fisher College on Saturday at 6 p.m. in the opening
round and will host the semifinals and championship game on Sunday.
Coast Guard will open conference play on January 6th at
Wheaton. Last year, the Bears finished 6-19 overall and 2-12 in the
always tough New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC).
It was another great year for the NEWMAC as the conference sent three
teams to the NCAA tournament after sending four teams in the 2013-14
season.
