Smith, Stillwell Lead Volleyball in 3-0 Sweep over Penn

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Junior Payton Smith recorded 11 kills, freshman Sabrina Stillwell tallied 10 kills, and Brown University volleyball swept the University of Pennsylvania in straight sets, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-23), on Saturday night at the Pizzitola Sports Center.

The Bears (9-10, 3-4 Ivy) trailed just once in the match – when the Quakers (9-10, 3-4 Ivy) led 1-0 to start set two – and bounced back from a five-set setback to Princeton on Friday night.

"This team has a lot of heart. After losing a five-set match last night, knowing that we played two
great sets but lost the match, they wanted to make sure they came in today and played a complete match," 23rd-year head coach Diane Short said. "To win in three – that is just the best. It was a great team win."

Smith (Atherton, Calif.) hit .611 in the match, notching a hitting percentage above .600 for the third time this season while Stilwell hit .320. Senior Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) contributed nine kills and 11 digs.

Senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) totaled a team-high 20 assists and eight digs, junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) compiled a double-double (13 assists, 12 digs) for the second time in as many matches, and freshman libero Elisa Merten (Woodside, Calif.) posted a team-best 13 digs.

"We've been working on focusing on the present moment – forget about the past," Short said.
In set one, the Bears jumped out to an 11-5 edge and pushed their lead to as large as 10 points at 20-10 en route to the 25-18 set win. Frost and Stillwell recorded five and four kills respectively while Merten came up with nine digs in the frame.

Brown started set two with an 11-6 advantage and maintained a 20-13 edge later in the period. The hosts kept at least a four-point lead the rest of the way in the 25-19 win in the stanza. Smith logged four kills on six swings with no errors in the set.

The hosts gained a 5-0 lead to initiate set three before Penn knotted the score at 7-7. Brown still held a 16-12 edge, but the Quakers worked their way back into the frame, tying it at 19-19. The set remained tied at 23-23, but a service error from Penn and a Stillwell kill gave the Bears the match.
Next, Brown hosts Yale on Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. to conclude a four-match home stand.
