Volleyball Sweeps Cornell in Straight Sets in Home Opener, 3-0

PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island – Sophomore Shirin Tooloee notched a season and match-high 13 kills to lead Brown University volleyball past Cornell University in straight sets, 3-0 (25-11, 25-23, 25-15), in its home opener at the Pizzitola Sports Center on Friday night.

The Bears (7-6, 1-1 Ivy) took convincing wins from the Big Red (4-8, 0-2 Ivy) in the first and third sets and persevered through 12 ties and six lead changes to win set two.

Tooloee (San Jose, Calif.) tallied her first match this season with double-digit kills on .414 hitting
while freshman Courtney Palm (St. Louis, Mo.) posted a match-best six blocks to go with four kills on four swings. Freshman Sabrina Stillwell (Laguna Beach, Calif.) added eight kills.

Senior Rachele Killian (Laguna Beach, Calif.) distributed 16 assists, and junior Sarah Lucenti (Manhattan Beach, Calif.) dished out 12 helpers.

Sophomore libero Melissa Cairo (Hilsborough, Calif.) and senior Shannon Frost (Santa Ana, Calif.) each registered 13 digs with Cairo totaling double-figure digs for the 12th time in 13 matches.

Behind a crowd of 352 fans, the Bears jumped out to a 16-4 lead in the first set en route to the 25-11 win in the frame. After Cornell took the first point, the Bears rattled off seven in a row and took an edge as large as 22-7. Tooloee posted five kills in the frame, and Frost had six digs.

The Bears withstood a Big Red counter in the second stanza, claiming a 22-18 lead after the two teams played within two points of each for the majority of the set. Cornell pulled within 22-21, but the Bears held on for the 25-23 win. Stillwell landed four kills in the period while Frost and Cairo each had six digs.

The hosts held a 12-6 advantage early in set three and maintained a cushion throughout the frame, leading wire to wire in the 25-15 victory. Tooloee terminated on another five kills in the set.

Next, Brown hosts Columbia University tomorrow at 5 p.m.
