Mitchell College Softball Sweeps Past Daniel Webster

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Mitchell College won both games of a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader against Daniel Webster College on Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Mariners took the opener by a 14-0 final as Shannon O'Neil went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI to lead the way. In the nightcap, Brittany Fiederlein went 5-for-5 with three doubles and three RBI to help Mitchell to a 23-0 victory.

Fiederlein also picked up a pair of wins inside the circle. She allowed only five hits in 10.0 scoreless innings of work and struck out 13 to improve to 9-11 on the year.

Mitchell (9-21 overall, 8-8 NECC) will wrap up regular season play with a doubleheader at Southern
Vermont College on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m. Daniel Webster (3-21 overall, 0-16 NECC) closes out the season by hosting Newbury College on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Game 1 – Mitchell 14, Daniel Webster 0 (5 innings)

The Mariners scored two runs in the first inning to jump out to an early lead. Fiederlein knocked in the first run with a triple to center and scored on a double to left-center by O'Neil. Mitchell later extended the lead to 4-0 in the third on a two-run single by Jacquelyn White.

Mitchell sent 14 batters to the plate in the fourth inning and scored 10 runs to break the game open. O'Neil had an RBI double and an RBI single in the frame while Janelle Rice added a two-run single.

Daniel Webster put runners in scoring position in the first, fourth and fifth innings but couldn't cash in. Megan Blongy, Julia Bodoni and Kathryn Noreen each finished with hits for the Eagles.

Game 2 – Mitchell 23, Daniel Webster 0 (5 innings)

Mitchell put four runs on the scoreboard in the first inning and never looked back. Fiederlein plated the first run with a double to center field, and Jenny Groman and Taylor Duchesneau added RBI singles while Danielle Autieri brought in a run with a sac fly.

A two-run double by O'Neil and an RBI triple by White highlighted a seven-run second inning for the Mariners. Mitchell then put up 10 runs in the third inning as six players knocked in a run in the frame. Groman had a pair of RBI singles while Suzanne Vachon drove in two with a double to left.

Mitchell tacked on the final two runs in the fourth as Fiederlein's third double of the game plated the final run. She then picked up three quick outs in the fifth to cement the win.

Abigail Goslin and Courtney Warrington each recorded hits for Daniel Webster.
