Wesleyan’s Late Rally Falls Short as Cardinals Lose to Bowdoin, 11-10

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team used a three-goal run in the second half and held off a late Wesleyan University rally to claim an 11-10 win on Saturday afternoon at Ryan Field.

Wesleyan: 4-8, 1-7 NESCAC
Bowdoin: 6-7, 2-7 NESCAC

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The contest was a back-and-forth affair that saw neither team claim more than a two goal lead until Bowdoin's late run in the second half.
  • Wesleyan was led by a five-goal effort from Rachel Aronow ’17, while Meredith Smith ’17 added four scores. Nina Labovich ’16 made 13 stops in goal for Wesleyan.
  • Bowdoin's Kayli Weiss made 15 saves in 51:59 of action for the Polar Bears, allowing eight goals. Erin Morrissey allowed two goals in 8:01 of action for Bowdoin.
  • Lindsay Picard had three goals and six draw controls for Bowdoin, while Emma Beecher added three goals and an assist with four draws. Natalie Rudin and Megan O'Connor had two goals each for the Polar Bears.

FIRST HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • Wesleyan took its largest lead of the contest in the opening period thanks to a three-goal spurt that saw Aronow score a pair of goals to give her team a 6-4 edge.
  • Bowdoin answered with late goals by Beecher and O'Connor to deadlock the contest at six at intermission.

SECOND HALF HIGHLIGHTS

  • In the second half, the teams traded goals until the score reached 8-8 with under 15 minutes to play.
  • Picard scored a pair of goals 25 seconds apart to give the hosts the lead for good and Beecher scored with 8:01 remaining to give the Polar Bears an 11-8 edge.
  • Aronow answered with 6:54 remaining to cut the lead to 11-9, and Meredith Smith trimmed the lead to 11-10 with a goal at 1:05 for the Cardinals
  • Bowdoin's Hannah Hirschfeld won the ensuing draw control, however, and the Polar Bears were able to run out the remaining time to earn the victory

UP NEXT

  • Wesleyan is back in action Saturday, April 23 and will host No. 17 Tufts in its final regular season home game of the season. The game is scheduled to start at 12 p.m.
  • The Polar Bears will host nonconference foe Wheaton next Saturday at 12 p.m.
