Men's Lacrosse Leads Wire-to-Wire in NESCAC Victory Over Bowdoin

Recap, photo courtesy of Trinity College
Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College men's lacrosse team picked up its first New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory of the season with a 16-11 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears on Saturday afternoon at Jessee/Miller Field. The Bantams improve to 6-3 on the year with their second win in a row while Bowdoin falls to 5-4 overall. Trinity, which never trailed in today's matchup, returns to action on Wednesday night for another conference tilt, versus Connecticut College at home.

Trinity jumped out to an early, 5-0, lead thanks to Scott Morgan's (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) dominance in the faceoff circle and some nifty passing in front of the Polar Bear net. Morgan won the game's first six faceoffs which led to the run. Sophomore Drew Kozub (Hopkinton, Mass.) got the Bantams on the board 31 seconds in before assisting on a Max DeLaMater (Irvington, N.Y.) goal less than two minutes later. Senior Ben Knaus (Ross, Calif.) set up junior Ben Ferrucci (Essex, Conn.) on a score at the 11:47 mark before finding the back of the net himself with 10:17 left in the opening quarter. Ferrucci scored once more just 41 seconds after Knaus to cap off the run.

Bowdoin scored twice in a row to end the Bantam run before senior Teddy Myers (Washington, D.C.) answered with his ninth goal of the season to put Trinity back ahead by four. Jimmy Young (Exeter, N.H.) added Bowdoin's third goal of the afternoon with 3:11 left to cut the deficit to 6-3 after the first quarter.

The Bantams outscored Bowdoin, 5-3, in the second quarter to extend their lead to 11-6 at the half. Senior captain John Caraviello (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) scored twice in the second frame while Kozub, Ferrucci and rookie Jackson Wood (Alexandria, Va.) added tallies as well. Bowdoin got scores from Jeff Powers (Cohasett, Mass.) and Zach Chandler (Salisbury, Conn.) before Donal Mullane (Washington, D.C.) found the back of the net with six seconds left before halftime.

Both sides traded goals early in the third period, including a goal by Bowdoin's Brad Ingersoll (Waxhaw, N.C.) that was fired from 20-yards out to beat the shot clock. With 4:15 left in the third, Chandler fired another shot from distance that bounced and found netting to cut the deficit to 12-8. Trinity answered with back-to-back goals to end the quarter with a 14-8 lead, highlighted by a diving buzzer-beater from first-year Connor McCulloch (Alexandria, Va.).

Bowdoin outscored Trinity, 3-2, in the fourth quarter but a pair of timely goals and a stifling Bantam defense proved too much of a hurdle to overcome for the Polar Bears. Powers scored again, 45 seconds into the final frame but Kozub answered a couple minutes later to keep the lead steady.
Starting at the 9:02 mark, Bowdoin got back-to-back scores from Kendall Rogers (Morristown, N.J.) and Chandler to make it a 15-11 game, but that's as close as it got as Trinity held on down the stretch. Myers added a goal for the Bantams with 5:56 remaining, tightrope walking the crease line and bouncing a shot in from point-blank to help seal the win.

Trinity's defense came through clutch in numerous spots, forcing 11 Bowdoin turnovers on the day and gobbling up 49 ground balls. Trinity sophomore goalie Brady Burke (Duxbury, Mass.) was stellar between the pipes, finishing with 11 saves including four in the fourth quarter. Junior Will Hay (New York, N.Y.) and rookie Charlie Olsen (Darien, Conn.) led the Bantams with a pair of caused turnovers apiece while Morgan was ever-steady at the faceoff circle with a game-high 21 wins. Ferrucci and Kozub led the squad with three goals each while McCulloch, Caraviello, Myers and DeLaMater each tallied two scores

Nocella Earns Another Win in Florida

Recaps, photo courtesy of RWU
MINNEOLA, Fla. — The Roger Williams University softball team won 6-1 in today's first game against Northwestern-St. Paul and lost 3-4 to Utica on the last day of spring break for the Hawks.

In the opener, Roger Williams jumped out on top early and never looked back. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the first, Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) knocked a double to right center to score Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) and Alexis Romano (Shirley, N.Y.). Taylor Bigliani (Saint James, N.Y.) stepped up next and scored Alex Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) from third with a sacrifice fly to up Roger Williams up 3-0.

In the top of the second, the Hawks added three more runs in the frame. After a leadoff triple by Taylor Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.), Bella Malvinni (Westerly, R.I.) brought her home with an RBI single to make it 4-0 Roger Williams. Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) stepped up two batters later to lace a two-RBI single, bringing home Malvinni and Audrey Gavin (Old Lyme, Conn.).

The six-run lead would be more than enough for RWU starter Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.). She

RWU Women’s Lacrosse Set Back By Redlands

Recap, photo courtesy of RWU
REDLANDS, Calif. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse team dropped its first contest of 2019, falling 15-21 to the University of Redlands in a high-scoring affair.

Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.) began things with a goal at the 26:28 mark for the Hawks. Redlands' Hanna Morford came back with a pair of goals two minutes later to give the home squad the lead. After Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine) and Sydney Louie traded goals for both teams, Roger Williams went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-3 lead with 14:33 left in the first half.

Louie ended the Hawk run with a goal, but Flahive and Shayne Rivard (Easton, Conn.) combined for three goals to put RWU up 9-4 with just over five minutes left in the half. Isabella Blessington (Harpswell, Maine) tallied the final goal of the period to held RWU go into halftime with a 10-5 lead.

Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.) kicked off the second half with her first score of the game, extending RWU's lead 37 seconds into the period. Unfortunately for Roger Williams, the Hawks would be held scoreless over the next ten minutes while Redlands rolled off eight unanswered goals to turn a five-goal deficit into a three-goal lead.

Roger Williams would not be deterred, coming back with four straight scores to regain the lead (15-14) with 8:01 to play. However, that would be the last goals of the evening for the Hawks. Redlands took the lead with 4:31 to play then ended the game with five more goals to roll to a 21-15 win.

Flahive finished with five points (4 G, 1 A) and a game-high ten draw controls, while Maeve Gillis (Duxbury, Mass.) also added five points (3 G, 2 A) and four draw controls. Madi Drain (Waterboro, Maine) added four ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Hannah Goodwin (Bradford, Mass.) took the loss, making five saves in 42:22 of play. Lydia Nelson played 17:38 of relief, also adding five saves.

LEXINGTON, S.C.—The Roger Williams Baseball team was defeated against Case Western Reserve 8-4 on a Thursday afternoon at Lexington County Stadium.

Joey Gulino (Meriden, Conn.) led off for the Hawks singling to left field. Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) laid down a sacrifice bunt putting Gulino at second. Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) grounded out to second base but advanced Gulino to third. Keaton Stankowski (New Albany, Ohio), the pitcher for the Spartans, threw a wild pitch causing Gulino to score for the first run of the game.

The Spartans responded with two RBI singles to put them up one run in the top of the second (2-1).

In the bottom of the second, Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) led off and tripled to the left center gap. Anthony Dominguez (Chester, N.J.) came up after him and hit a single through the right side plating Camner. After a throwing error by the Spartan's pitcher, Tyler Brett (Hebron, Conn.) was due up next and singled to right center bringing in Tommy Hobin (Madison, Conn.) and Dominguez to take back the lead 4-2.

It was the fourth inning for CWR that put them ahead 6-4. One double and four singles brought in four runs for the Spartans.

It wasn't until the top of the eighth that the Spartans earned two more runs by a home run from Samuel Neal (Smithfield, Va.) and an RBI double by Jake Ryan (Chatham, Ill.) to leave the score at 8-4.

Chris Flynn (Naugatuck, Conn.), Matt Vernacatola (Berlin, Conn.), and Chris Crawford (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) all took a turn on the mound allowing a collective 11 hits, 8 runs, 8 walks, and 3 strikeouts.

March 13th Recap By Casie Beauchemin RWU Assistant Athletic Communications Director

LEXINGTON, S.C.—The Roger Williams Baseball team lost a pair of games today against Case Western Reserve University 19-1 and Brevard College 7-6.

The Spartans took the early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Jacob Kucia (Strongsville, Ohio), a fielder's choice by Tre Armstrong (New Castle, Del.), and a walk from
Hawk's pitcher Tyler Brett (Hebron, Conn.). In the bottom of the third, CWR earned another run by an RBI double from Rocco Maue (Moon Township, Pa.).

It was the bottom of the fourth that the Spartans really showed up with a three run homerun, one double, six singles, and two hit by pitches for a 16-0 lead going into the fifth.

After Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) was hit by a pitch from Noah Merhle (Liberty Township, Ohio), Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice advancing Bosco.

From there, Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) grounded out to the pitcher but got an RBI out of it to gain another run.

However, the Spartans came out strong in the bottom of the sixth to piece together three more runs ending with a final score of 19-1.

In game two, the Tornados came out ready offensively with a double, two singles, and an error that caused three runs to score right off the bat.

But with the heart of the lineup coming up, the Hawks started to chip away earning one run in the third. Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) crushed a double to left center starting things off for RWU. After Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, Camner ripped a single through the left side scoring Roth to make it 3-1.

In the fourth, Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) came up with the bases loaded and no outs and hit a hard ground ball to the third baseman who bobbled it but stepped on third for the force out.
However, Roth scored on the play to become within one to the Tornadoes (3-2).

In top of five, Bosco hit a triple over the center fielder's head which led him to scoring on a wild pitch for a tie ball game 3-3.

The Tornados answered right away in the fifth with an RBI double to center field from Jason Jucker (Altamonte Springs, Fla.). In the bottom sixth, Ryan Roon (Dallas, Ga.) homered over the right field fence increasing their lead 5-3. In innings seven and eight, the Tornados gained two more runs for a score of 7-3.

The Hawks did not give up without a fight in the top of the ninth. With one out and two men on base, Roth stepped up to the plate and hit a three run homer to left field to put the Hawks within one.
Two more Hawks got on base but the game ended with a ground out double play 7-6.

Baseball Downs Caldwell, 22-2

Recap, photo courtesy of Southern Connecticut State University
LANTANA, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University baseball team defeated Caldwell, 22-2, in a non-conference matchup at the Santaluces Athletic Complex in Lantana, Fla. With the win, the Owls improve to 6-9 on the season while the Cougars drop to 2-5.

Nate Carney (Bristol, Conn.) was dealing for the Owls as he held Caldwell to one run while scattering nine hits over seven strong innings. Carney struck-out a season-high nine batters while not issuing a walk.

At the plate, John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.) drove in five runs while Connor Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) was 3-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored. Cameron O'Toole (Grafton, Mass.) also drove in three runs and scored four more. Nolan Cloutier (Wallingford, Conn.) continued his hot streak with a pair of hits as well as two RBI and three runs scored.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Owls first run of the game came in their first at-bats when O'Toole scored on a wild pitch. The Owls tacked on four more runs in the second inning, three of which were unearned.
  • The Owls put together a nine-run inning in the fourth highlighted by RBI singles from Cloutier and O'Toole and a two-run single by Spoto.
  • In the sixth, Spoto lined a two-run double before Cloutier drove in another run with a base hit to give the Owls a 17-0 lead.
  • Caldwell finally broke through with a run in the seventh inning, ending Carney's shutout bid in his final inning of work.
  • Southern responded with a five-run eighth inning to take a 22-1 lead with Redahan driving in another run and freshman Mike Ferrett (Hamden, Conn.) with a pinch-hit, two-run double.
  • Jared Henry (West Stockbridge, Mass.) came on in relief of Carney in the eighth, and gave up a hit to the first batter he faced, who scored to cut the Owls lead to 22-2.

NOTES

  • Carney picks up his first win of the season with his longest outing of the year. He logged six innings in each of his first two starts of the season.
  • He also runs his streak of innings without a walk to 21 1/3 innings over five appearances. Going back to last season, has gone 39 innings without issuing a walk and has just one in his last 45 innings pitched.
  • Carney's nine strikeouts tie his most in a start since he struck-out nine batters against Southern New Hampshire on Apr. 8, 2017 as a freshman.
  • Spoto's five-RBI day are a career-best, topping his four-RBI day against American International on Apr. 28, 2018.
  • The third-year Owl has been on a tear in Florida as he now owns a five-game hitting streak in which he is hitting .370 (10-27) in seven games with three multiple-hit games.
  • Cloutier also picks up his team-best ninth multiple-hit game of the season and fifth in his last seven games. Cloutier is hitting a team-leading .500 (12-24) during the Owls' Spring Break trip and has plated a team-best 10 runs.
  • Redahan's two-hit day gives him a 14-game hitting streak, the longest for Southern since Nick Lamberti's 17-game run in 2017.
  • Lamberti has now reached base safely in eight-straight games.
  •  As a team, the Owls set season-highs in runs scored (22), RBI (19), walks (15) and batters hit-by-pitches (6). The Owls' 22 runs are its most since they scored the same amount against Lynn on Mar. 22, 2016.

Redahan (Greenwich, Conn.) was 1-for-4 with RBI while Anthony Zambito (Ridgewood, N.J.) scored the Owls' only run. Jim Palmer (Milford, Conn.), John Spoto (Stamford, Conn.), Trevor Whalen (Rocky Hill, Conn.) and Nick Lamberti (East Haven, Conn.) also had hits for the Owls.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • St. Thomas got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first inning when a throwing area led to a runner moving into scoring position, and then scoring an unearned run.
  • Southern tied the game in the third when Zambito walked and then stole second base before Redahan singled to drive him home and tie the game at 1-1.
  • St. Thomas responded in the bottom half of the inning when a pair of doubles wrapped around a single plated three runs to give the Bobcats a 4-1 lead.
  • St. Thomas manufactured a run in the fourth, and three more in the eighth, to jump out to a seven-run lead at 8-1.

NOTES

  • Redahan's RBI single in the third inning gives him a team-best 13-game hitting streak, tied for the longest since Kyle Hart in 2017.
  • Spoto has now hit in four-straight games while Lamberti has reached base safely in six-consecutive games.
  • Zambito's run scored was his team-leading 16th of the season.
