Seahawks Spoil RIC Women’s Lacrosse Season-Opener

Newport, R.I.— Rhode Island College senior goalkeeper Julia Eaton (Cumberland, RI) made 18 saves as the women's lacrosse team opened the 2019 season with a 20-4 setback at Salve Regina on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Freshman midfielder Olivia Carpenito (Wilmington, MA) had one goal and an assist for two points to go along with two ground balls. Sophomore midfielder Giana Ritchie (Cumberland, RI) had one goal, two ground balls and a pair of draw controls.

• Freshman midfielder Morgan Pero (White River Jct., VT) and junior midfielder Angie Leonardo (East Providence, RI) each had a goal in the loss.

• Salve Regina junior attacker Maddie Villareal (Portsmouth, RI) finished with four goals and three assists for seven points. Sophomore goalkeeper Christina Myers (River Edge, NJ) made five saves in the win (2-0).

• The Seahawks led in shots (45-11), draw controls (17-7) and ground balls (23-9).

• The hosts ripped off the game's first five goals over the first 10 minutes of the first half and led, 12-2 at the break.  SRU outscored the Anchorwomen, 8-2, in the second half.

WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will play at Mitchell on Saturday, March 16 (11 a.m.).
