WASHINGTON, D.C. – Senior Cat Seitz hit her second home run of the weekend, and sophomore Madi Cranford
went 4-for-4 on the day, but Brown University softball dropped
decisions to Bucknell University, 9-0, and Georgetown University, 10-7,
on Sunday at the Washington Nationals Youth Academy.
Playing in their third and fourth games at the District Classic, the
Bears (1-3) held a 7-4 lead against the Hoyas (5-12) in the eventual
setback and fell to the Bison (6-6) in five innings in game one.
"Despite today's results, we had a lot of positive takeaways from our first weekend," Brown head coach Kate Refsnyder
said. "Playing against teams that already have several games under
their belts is a challenge, but we were in position to win three of our
four games. We'll learn from our mistakes this weekend and look forward
to playing four games in North Carolina next weekend."
Seitz (Poway, Calif.) registered her ninth career homer while Cranford
(Escondido, Calif.) finished the day 4-for-4 with an RBI and a double.
For the weekend, Cranford hit .875 (7-for-8) with two doubles and three
RBIs while Seitz hit .357 (5-for-14) with six runs, three doubles, three
RBIs, and two homers.
Next, Brown plays at the North Carolina A&T Aggie Invitational from
Mar. 8-10, competing against Rider (Mar. 8, 9:30 a.m.), N.C. A&T
(Mar. 8, 2:30 p.m.), Alabama A&M (Mar. 9, 2:30 p.m.), and Rider
(Mar. 10, 9:30 a.m.).
Game 1: Bucknell 9, Brown 0 (5 Innings)
Sophomore Karina Chavarria
hit her first double of the season, but Brown fell to Bucknell, 9-0, in
five innings on Sunday morning in its first game of the day and third
contest at the District Classic.
The Bison struck for two runs in the first inning, four runs in the
second, and three runs in the fourth on their way to the win over the
Bears.
Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) and sophomore Madi Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) each posted a hit for the Bears.
For Bucknell, Raeanne Geffert threw a complete-game shutout, allowing
two hits with eight strikeouts over 5.0 innings. Anna Gimmestad and
Taylor Wolfgang each hit a home run and tallied three hits apiece.
Wolfgang accounted for four RBIs, and Gimmestad added three RBIs.
In the top of the first, Gimmestad and Wolfgang each drove in a run with
a double to go ahead 2-0. The Bison tallied four runs in the second
stanza, including a two-run double for Wolfgang to gain a 6-0 edge.
Bucknell extended its margin to 9-0 with three runs in the top of the
fourth behind a solo shot from Gimmestad and a two-run homer from
Wolfgang.
Sophomore Grace Ladd (Boulder, Colo.) took the loss (0-1), tossing 2.0 innings in the start. Junior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) pitched 3.0 innings in relief.
Game 1: Georgetown 10, Brown 7

went 3-for-3, but Brown dropped a 10-7 decision to Georgetown on Sunday
afternoon in its second game of the day and fourth game of the
tournament.
The Bears held a 5-0 lead through two innings and a 7-4 edge through the
top of the fifth before the host Hoyas plated six runs in the bottom of
the fifth to earn the win.
Seitz (Poway, Calif.) finished the game 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI,
and her home run while Cranford (Escondido, Calif.) went 3-for-3 with a
double and an RBI. Senior Ashli Lotz (Austin, Texas) posted a 2-for-4 effort with two runs.
Brown struck for four runs in the top of the first as Seitz stole home, sophomore Karina Chavarria (San Bruno, Calif.) brought home a run with a walk, and senior Sofia Venegas (La Mirada, Calif.) hit a two-run double up the middle.
The Bears extended their lead to 5-0 in the top of the second as
Cranford sent an RBI double into left field. Georgetown answered with
four runs in the bottom of the third, pulling within 5-4.
Brown went up 7-4 behind a solo shot from Seitz to right center in the top of the fourth and an RBI triple from sophomore Anya Schmitz (Santa Barbara, Calif.) in the top of the fifth.
The Hoyas responded with six runs in the last of the fifth, including a three-run double from Noelle Holiday.
For Georgetown, London Diller gained the win, throwing 4.0 innings in
the start and giving up six runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Mae
Forshey and Holiday each tallied three RBIs.
Junior Emily Waters (Northridge, Calif.) pitched 5.2 innings in the start, permitting six runs on four hits with two strikeouts.
