Bears Fall to Washington

CHESTERTOWN, Md.-- Coast Guard women's lacrosse dropped a 17-6 setback against Washington College on Tuesday afternoon. The Bears fall to 1-4 on the season, while Washington improves to 2-2.

Sophomore Haley Howard scored two goals with four ground balls and three caused turnovers. Freshman Maddie Rizzuto and sophomore Etta Davis tallied two goals each and sophomore Mel Goins also scored one goal and Leah Llewellyn caused two turnovers and grabbed one ground ball in the loss.

Washington was led by Cecily Docktor with two goals and five assists, Lauren Brenner had two goals and four assists, Aubrey Robinson put up four goals, and Kristy Grovom scored a hat trick of her own.

Washington opened the game with a four-goal run, with two coming from Robinson. Rizzuto and Howard scored the first two for the Bears, cutting the deficit, 4-2. Brenner scored the next two and extended Washington's lead, 6-2 but Davis and Rizzuto answered, with back-to-back goals to bring the Bears within two, 6-4. Davis scored her second goal at 19:06 to make it 7-5 in favor of Washington, but Washington went on to score the final three goals of the half to take a 10-5 lead at halftime.

Washington opened the second half with three more goals to extend to 13-5. Haley Howard scored at 25:14 on a free position shot, as the Bears trailed 13-6. Mel Goins scored at 6:20, but Washington finished with the 18-7 victory over the Bears.

Sophomore goalkeeper Rebecca Dolan made ten saves in her 36 minutes of action and Mary Budri made four saves in the remaining 24 minutes.

The Bears are back in action on Wednesday, March 20 at 7:00 PM when they travel to Roger Williams.
