LEXINGTON, S.C.—The Roger Williams Baseball team lost a pair of games today against Case Western Reserve University 19-1 and Brevard College 7-6.
The Spartans took the early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first with an RBI single from Jacob Kucia (Strongsville, Ohio), a fielder's choice by Tre Armstrong (New Castle, Del.), and a walk from
Hawk's pitcher Tyler Brett (Hebron, Conn.). In the bottom of the third, CWR earned another run by an RBI double from Rocco Maue (Moon Township, Pa.).
It was the bottom of the fourth that the Spartans really showed up with a three run homerun, one double, six singles, and two hit by pitches for a 16-0 lead going into the fifth.
After Chris Bosco (North Andover, Mass.) was hit by a pitch from Noah Merhle (Liberty Township, Ohio), Brandon Jenkins (East Bridgewater, Mass.) reached on a fielder's choice advancing Bosco.
From there, Eli Camner (Hamden, Conn.) grounded out to the pitcher but got an RBI out of it to gain another run.
However, the Spartans came out strong in the bottom of the sixth to piece together three more runs ending with a final score of 19-1.
In game two, the Tornados came out ready offensively with a double, two singles, and an error that caused three runs to score right off the bat.
But with the heart of the lineup coming up, the Hawks started to chip away earning one run in the third. Danny Roth (West Hartford, Conn.) crushed a double to left center starting things off for RWU. After Ben Bonavita (East Longmeadow, Mass.) was hit by a pitch, Camner ripped a single through the left side scoring Roth to make it 3-1.
In the fourth, Tyler Cedeno (Maynard, Mass.) came up with the bases loaded and no outs and hit a hard ground ball to the third baseman who bobbled it but stepped on third for the force out.
However, Roth scored on the play to become within one to the Tornadoes (3-2).
In top of five, Bosco hit a triple over the center fielder's head which led him to scoring on a wild pitch for a tie ball game 3-3.
The Tornados answered right away in the fifth with an RBI double to center field from Jason Jucker (Altamonte Springs, Fla.). In the bottom sixth, Ryan Roon (Dallas, Ga.) homered over the right field fence increasing their lead 5-3. In innings seven and eight, the Tornados gained two more runs for a score of 7-3.
The Hawks did not give up without a fight in the top of the ninth. With one out and two men on base, Roth stepped up to the plate and hit a three run homer to left field to put the Hawks within one.
Two more Hawks got on base but the game ended with a ground out double play 7-6.
