NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – The Southern Connecticut State University women's lacrosse team lost a Northeast 10 Conference matchup against Merrimack, 18-6, in North Andover, Mass. With the loss, the Owls drop to 0-4 overall and open conference play at 0-1 while Merrimack improves to 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the NE10.
Hailey Gordon (Niantic, Conn.) and Samantha Cozzolino (Hamden, Conn.) both scored twice while Karlie Rowe (Niantic, Conn.) and Stephanie Seymour (North Branford, Conn.) also scored for the Owls and had a team-high four ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Merrimack opened the game with a three-goal run before Cozzolino scored her ninth goal of the season on a free position shot to cut the Warriors lead to two goals, 3-1.
- The Warriors scored six unanswered goals to jump out to a 9-1 lead before Cozzolino scored again, on a free position shot, for her 10thgoal of the season.
- After Merrimack scored twice more before halftime to take an 11-2 lead into the break, they opened the second half with three unanswered goals to grab a 14-2 lead.
- The Owls responsded with four unanswered goals, two coming from Gordon, before Merrimack padded its lead with a four-goal run to end the game.
NOTES
- Cozzolino now leads the Owls with 10 goals for the season.
- Gordon pushes her season total to five goals, while Rowe's season total grows to seven, trailing only Cozzolino. Seymours goal was her second of the season.
- Seymour also leads the team with 11 ground balls. Her four ground ball day was her second-most this season after she collected five in the Owls' season-opener against Molloy. As a team, the Owls 17 ground balls were its second-most this season following its 18 against Molloy and matching its 17 against NYIT.
- For Merrimack, Amanda Feminella scored six goals and assisted on another one while Hailey Bartlett totaled four goals and an assist.
UP NEXT
The Owls resume NE10 play at University of New Haven on Tuesday, Mar. 12 at 4 p.m. before returning home to host Saint Anselm on Saturday, Mar. 16 at 1 p.m.
