Bears Split Day Three of The Spring Games

KISSIMMEE, Fla.-- Coast Guard softball split on the third day of The Spring Games in Florida. The Bears started the day with a 11-8 victory over Webster University and then dropped a 9-8 setback against Ohio Wesleyan. The Bears are now 3-3, while Webster falls to 1-8 and Ohio Wesleyan is now 1-2.

The Bears are back in action on Thursday, March 14 at 9:00 AM against Scranton and at 11:15 AM against Ursinus.

GAME ONE-- COAST GUARD 11, WEBSTER 8

The Bears had a season-high 15 hits in the victory, with a team-high 3 coming from junior Claire Hurley. Juniors Courtney McKenna, Kayla Sowers, Carly Hattman, sophomore Charlee Kraiss,and freshman Maggie Perez all added two hits for Coast Guard.

The Bears got on the board first, as they used three hits to plate two runs in the top of the second to take an early 2-0 lead. Webster tied the game in the bottom of the third on a two-run double by Darion Morlan.

Coast Guard had a strong fourth inning as they sent 10 hitters to the plate and scored five runs on six hits. Kraiss and McKenna both had big hits in the inning with two-run singles each as the Bears took a 7-2 lead.

In the bottom of the fifth, Webster got three runs to pull within 7-5.

The Bears responded in the top of the sixth when they had five hits and a passed ball to score four runs and extend the lead 11-5.

Webster score two more in the sixth and one in the seventh to cut their deficit by three but junior Julia Ferris, struck out Taylor Jackson for the final out of the game as the Bears took the 11-8 victory.
Ferris got the win in the circle as she threw the final 2.1 innings and allowed four hits and three runs (one earned), while walking one and striking out three.

GAME TWO-- OHIO WESLEYAN 9, COAST GUARD 8
Junior Audrey Bartz hit a one-run homerun and Hurley was 3 for 5 with three RBI's in the Bears 9-8 setback against Ohio Wesleyan. The Bears had 13 hits in the loss including two from Kraiss, McKenna, and senior Sharayah Simco.

Ohio Wesleyan got on the board first with an RBI single by Erica Buchanan at the top of the fourth. Bartz answered in the bottom of the fourth with her home run to tie it, 1-1. The Bears extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth with four more hits to take a 5-1 advantage.

Hattman hit a one-run double, followed by a two-run single from Hurley to give the Bears an 8-1 lead at the bottom of the fifth.

Ohio Wesleyan rallied in the final two innings as they used five runs in the sixth and three runs in the seventh to comeback and win it 9-8.
