Owls Drop Doubleheader to Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Southern Connecticut State University softball squad dropped two games to Rollins College, 6-0 and 1-0 at MLK Park in Winter Park, Fla. The Owls drop to 1-9 overall, while the Tars improve to 22-5.

For Southern Connecticut, Sara Buscetto (Waterford, Conn.) and Alexa Bacoulis (Monroe, Conn.) were the offense-generators for the Owls as they both went 3-for-7 on the day.

       Game 1 vs. Rollins

  • Rollins got on the board early with a solo homerun to left field in the first inning.
  • They added three more third-inning runs off three hits before adding their final run in the sixth inning off a double to left center field.
  • The Tars steady offense throughout seven innings was the key to their 6-0 game one victory.

       Game Facts
  • Bacoulis was one of four Owls to collect hits as she went 2-for-4 in game one.
  • Sophomore Jazmyn Martinez (Middletown, N.Y.) pitched six innings with four strikeouts in 32 batters faced.

       Game 2 vs. Rollins
  • Rollins opened game two with a run in the first inning off a solo homerun to left field.
  • Their first inning homerun was the deciding factor as the Tars captured the 1-0 victory in the final game of the day.

       Game Facts
  • Buscetto went 2-for-3 in the second showing of the day with one stolen base.
  • Bacoulis and freshman Liz DeRosa (Hudson, N.H.) collected a hit apiece.
  • Sophomore Kailey Westington (Ridgefield, Conn.) pitched six innings with one strikeout in 26 batters faced.

        Notes
  • Junior Sara Buscetto and freshman Liz DeRosa extended their hitting streak to three games.
  • Buscetto's game two stolen base puts her at six on the year. She is currently tied for second in the NE10 in stolen bases.
  • In addition to her three-game hitting streak, DeRosa's collegiate career has gotten off to a hot start as she leads the team in RBI (5), third in hits (8) and tied for second with Buscetto in doubles (2).
  • Junior Julia Lener is leading the offensive charge through the first ten games with a .313 batting average, .375 slugging average, a team-high four runs and tied for a team-high ten hits including two doubles and four RBI.

Up Next
The Owls will take a five-day hiatus in preparation for their home opener on Tuesday, March 19 when they host LIU Post for a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.
