Women’s Lacrosse Wins In Close Game Against JWU

BRISTOL, R.I. — The Roger Williams University Women's Lacrosse Team won its 2019 home opener against Johnson & Wales University in a close game Tuesday, 14-12.

A minute into the game, Ashley Warren (Wilmington, Mass.) logged the first goal to put the Hawks on the board first. Nine minutes later, Maria Patane (Greenwich, N.Y.) reached the back of the net twice for the Wildcats in 16 seconds to bring the score to 2-1.

With an unassisted goal, Shayne Rivard (Easton, Conn.) tied the game 2-2 until Allison Pazienski (New Hyde Park, N.Y.) scored two more goals five minutes later for JWU, giving them the lead at 4-2.

With the score tied at five with less than eight minutes in the half, Pazienski put in three straight goals to take the score to 8-5 going into the second half.

Less than 30 seconds into the second half, Stoeppel took an assist from Rivard to cut the deficit to two with the Hawks down 6-8. Two minutes later, Rivard passed the ball to Devon Sarazin (Falmouth, Maine) to log a goal for RWU.

To tie the game for the fourth time, Warren took an assist from Lauren Flahive (Foxborough, Mass.) to put the score at 8-8. Four minutes later, Stoeppel passed the ball to Maeve Gillis (Duxbury, Mass.) to put the Hawks in the lead for the first time since the first goal in the game.

With 12 minutes remaining in the game, Sarazin logged a goal after taking an assist from Rivard to bring their lead to two. After missed shots from Pazienski and Medina for the Wildcats, Madeline Bishara (Saunderstown, R.I.) found the back of the net to put bring JWU within one. Thirty seconds later, Medina logged another goal in a free position shot to tie the game once again, 10-10. About two minutes later, the Wildcats took back the lead with an assist from Medina and goal from Giello to bring the score to 11-10.

The teams traded goals as Sarazin gave an assist to Stoeppel, followed with a goal from Patane for JWU, tailed with an unassisted goal from Sarazin to keep the game tied, 12-12. With less than two minutes left, Stoeppel scored two goals taking an assist for one from Rivard, to win the game for the Hawks, 14-12.

Stoeppel led RWU with eight points on six goals and two assists including seven draw controls. Sarazin also contributed with three goals and one assist. Hannah Goodwin earned her first collegiate win, making eight saves in the second half.

Pazienski led JWU with seven points on five goals and two assists. Medina also contributed with two goals and four assists. Paiton Luis took the loss for JWU, making ten saves on the night.

Roger Williams (1-0) will host Massachusetts Institute of Technology this Saturday.
