Hartford, Conn. – The Trinity College men's lacrosse team picked up its first New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) victory of the season with a 16-11 win over the Bowdoin College Polar Bears on Saturday afternoon at Jessee/Miller Field. The Bantams improve to 6-3 on the year with their second win in a row while Bowdoin falls to 5-4 overall. Trinity, which never trailed in today's matchup, returns to action on Wednesday night for another conference tilt, versus Connecticut College at home.
Trinity jumped out to an early, 5-0, lead thanks to Scott Morgan's (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) dominance in the faceoff circle and some nifty passing in front of the Polar Bear net. Morgan won the game's first six faceoffs which led to the run. Sophomore Drew Kozub (Hopkinton, Mass.) got the Bantams on the board 31 seconds in before assisting on a Max DeLaMater (Irvington, N.Y.) goal less than two minutes later. Senior Ben Knaus (Ross, Calif.) set up junior Ben Ferrucci (Essex, Conn.) on a score at the 11:47 mark before finding the back of the net himself with 10:17 left in the opening quarter. Ferrucci scored once more just 41 seconds after Knaus to cap off the run.
Bowdoin scored twice in a row to end the Bantam run before senior Teddy Myers (Washington, D.C.) answered with his ninth goal of the season to put Trinity back ahead by four. Jimmy Young (Exeter, N.H.) added Bowdoin's third goal of the afternoon with 3:11 left to cut the deficit to 6-3 after the first quarter.
The Bantams outscored Bowdoin, 5-3, in the second quarter to extend their lead to 11-6 at the half. Senior captain John Caraviello (Wellesley Hills, Mass.) scored twice in the second frame while Kozub, Ferrucci and rookie Jackson Wood (Alexandria, Va.) added tallies as well. Bowdoin got scores from Jeff Powers (Cohasett, Mass.) and Zach Chandler (Salisbury, Conn.) before Donal Mullane (Washington, D.C.) found the back of the net with six seconds left before halftime.
Both sides traded goals early in the third period, including a goal by Bowdoin's Brad Ingersoll (Waxhaw, N.C.) that was fired from 20-yards out to beat the shot clock. With 4:15 left in the third, Chandler fired another shot from distance that bounced and found netting to cut the deficit to 12-8. Trinity answered with back-to-back goals to end the quarter with a 14-8 lead, highlighted by a diving buzzer-beater from first-year Connor McCulloch (Alexandria, Va.).
Bowdoin outscored Trinity, 3-2, in the fourth quarter but a pair of timely goals and a stifling Bantam defense proved too much of a hurdle to overcome for the Polar Bears. Powers scored again, 45 seconds into the final frame but Kozub answered a couple minutes later to keep the lead steady.
Starting at the 9:02 mark, Bowdoin got back-to-back scores from Kendall Rogers (Morristown, N.J.) and Chandler to make it a 15-11 game, but that's as close as it got as Trinity held on down the stretch. Myers added a goal for the Bantams with 5:56 remaining, tightrope walking the crease line and bouncing a shot in from point-blank to help seal the win.
Trinity's defense came through clutch in numerous spots, forcing 11 Bowdoin turnovers on the day and gobbling up 49 ground balls. Trinity sophomore goalie Brady Burke (Duxbury, Mass.) was stellar between the pipes, finishing with 11 saves including four in the fourth quarter. Junior Will Hay (New York, N.Y.) and rookie Charlie Olsen (Darien, Conn.) led the Bantams with a pair of caused turnovers apiece while Morgan was ever-steady at the faceoff circle with a game-high 21 wins. Ferrucci and Kozub led the squad with three goals each while McCulloch, Caraviello, Myers and DeLaMater each tallied two scores
