Nocella Earns Another Win in Florida

MINNEOLA, Fla. — The Roger Williams University softball team won 6-1 in today's first game against Northwestern-St. Paul and lost 3-4 to Utica on the last day of spring break for the Hawks.

In the opener, Roger Williams jumped out on top early and never looked back. With the bases loaded and one out in the top of the first, Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) knocked a double to right center to score Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) and Alexis Romano (Shirley, N.Y.). Taylor Bigliani (Saint James, N.Y.) stepped up next and scored Alex Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) from third with a sacrifice fly to up Roger Williams up 3-0.

In the top of the second, the Hawks added three more runs in the frame. After a leadoff triple by Taylor Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.), Bella Malvinni (Westerly, R.I.) brought her home with an RBI single to make it 4-0 Roger Williams. Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) stepped up two batters later to lace a two-RBI single, bringing home Malvinni and Audrey Gavin (Old Lyme, Conn.).

The six-run lead would be more than enough for RWU starter Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.). She
would hold Northwestern-St. Paul to only one run over the course of the game. Nocella went the distance, allowing the lone run in seven innings of work with five strikeouts for her first collegiate complete game.

Romano finished 2-for-4 with a run scored in the game for RWU, while Provencal was 1-for-2 with a run and two walks. Tara Chatowsky added one hit and two RBIs.

Game two was a tough loss for the Hawks that went into extra innings. Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) pitched eight straight innings only allowing six hits, four runs, one walk, and earning three strikeouts.

In the bottom of the third, Provencal singled to the shortstop stealing second on the next pitch. With two outs, Tr. Chatowsky doubled through the right side scoring Provencal. Amanda Boulter (Wakefield, Mass.) then hit an RBI single to right field plating Tr. Chatowsky for a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, Utica came back strong scoring three runs from two singles and two errors in the field putting them ahead one (3-2).

The Hawks added one more run in the bottom of the sixth when Ty Chatowsky laid down a beautiful bunt to the pitcher for a single and then stole second. Malvinni then sacrificed a bunt to move Ty Chatowsky over to third in scoring position. Gavin then reached first base on an error by the pitcher causing Ty Chatowsky to score to tie the game 3-3.

In extra innings with a runner automatically set on second base, a strike out and a catch by Boulter in foul territory gave the Hawks an early two outs. However, Jacqueline Aronin (Naugatuck, Conn.) who was on second advanced to third on the play. With obvious pressure, Nicole Rice (Williamsville, N.Y.) singled to right field scoring the winning run for the Lakers.

RWU, in the bottom of the eighth left a runner on third to end the game 4-3.

The Hawks look to play Coast Guard in a double header 3:00 and 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19th.

March 13th Recap

MINNEOLA, Fla.—The Roger Williams Softball team defeated Simpson College 7-4 and Geneva College 10-6 on a sunny afternoon in Florida.

The Hawks took the 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Bella Malvinni (Westerly, R.I.) reached on an error by the center fielder scoring Tara Chatowsky (North Kingstown, R.I.) and Katrina Goria (Wyckoff, N.J.).

In the bottom of the third, Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) singled to right field and then advanced to second from a ground out by Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.). Alexandra Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) was next up to bat and hit the ball up the middle to score Provencal for a 3-0 lead.

However, the Storm caught up in the fourth hitting five singles and three RBI's tying the game at 3's.

Goria led off with a double to left field to begin the bottom of the fourth inning for the Hawks. New pitcher Mary Leopold (Thorndale, Texas) walked Chatowsky as Goria stole third. Malvinni hit a sacrifice fly to left field to plate Goria for the go ahead run. Now at the top of the lineup, Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) walks and Alexis Romano (Shirley, N.Y.) who went 3 for 4 on the day, singles to second scoring Chatowsky. Another sacrifice fly and Rachel Wandzilak's (West Islip, N.Y.) single scored two more for a 7-3 lead.

The Storm tried to come back in the bottom of the seventh scoring one final run on a couple of errors and a sacrifice fly but they could not get it done.

Freshman Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) recorded the first win of the day and her third of the season for the Hawks.

RWU came alive in the top of the second of game two.  With two outs and a pair of walks, E. Lombardo singled to left field scoring one. Romano was next up and hit the ball up the middle for a 2 RBI single to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead.

The Golden Tornados earned four runs between the third and the fourth inning to put them ahead 4-3.

In the top of the sixth, the Hawks tacked on another run to tie the game but Geneva answered shortly after scoring two more from a couple of errors in the field to make it 6-4.

The top of the seventh was a huge inning for the Hawks as they started off with Ellie Fleming's (Marshfield, Mass.) single through the left side. With one out, A. Lombardo popped up to the left fielder but advanced to second due to a drop ball. This is when Chatowsky smashed a triple to right field scoring two and tying the game at 6-6. With girls on first and second and two outs, Provencal singles to right field advancing on the throw and plating two while an obstruction was called on the catcher to also bring in Malvinni. Next up Goria hit an RBI single to center field scoring one more Hawk as they increase the lead 10-6.

The Golden Tornados tried to battle in the seventh but could not execute giving the Hawks their second win of the day.

Fleming who was on the mound for the Hawks will get the win allowing two runs and three walks.

March 11th Recap

 CLERMONT, Fla.—The Roger Williams Softball team won their first game 5-1 against Franklin & Marshall but lost the second 0-11 to Ursinus on day three of spring break.

In game one, Sydney Provencal (Cumberland, R.I.) got the Hawks started by singling to right field in the bottom of the second. Pitcher, Alyssa Murray (Green Brook, N.J.) reached second base on an error by the center field, advancing Provencal to third. With one out, Alexandra Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) roped a line drive to center field recording an RBI single for an early lead 1-0.

It wasn't until top of the sixth that the Diplomats tied the game 1-1. Caitlyn Erdman (Piscataway, N.J.) and Lexi Piccinich (Harrington, N.J.) each hit a single to gain momentum.  Abi Buell (East Northport, N.Y.) then follows by hitting a hard ground ball to second base and beating out the throw causing Erdman to score.

The bottom of the sixth was a huge inning for the Hawks as they tacked on four more runs. Emily Moll (Bedford, N.H.) was pitching for the Diplomats and hit Provencal by a pitch. Murray gets up to bat and hits a two run home run over the left field fence. Now with one out and A. Lombardo on first base, Madi Francis (Coventry, Conn.) bunts and reaches on an error advancing Lombardo to third. Elizabeth Lombardo (Thomaston, Conn.) hits a line drive to the right fielder plating her sister Alexandra and Francis.

The Diplomats tried to answer in the top of the seventh but could not get the job done. The score remained 5-1 until the end of the game.
Murray pitched a total of five innings, allowed four hits, one run, two walks, and one strike out. Lia Nocella (Tyngsboro, Mass.) came in for relief in the sixth and received the win allowing three hits, one walk, and earning three strike outs.

In game two, Ursinus collected a total of 14 hits in five innings and tallied 11 runs. Mackenzie Brennan (Northfield, N.J.) singled to center field right off the bat. Teammate Megan Hasulak (Marlton, N.J.) sacrificed bunted to the pitcher to move Brennan over to second. With one out, Heather Lazer (Havertown, Pa.) singles to center field advancing Brennan to third. Rachel Wandzilak (West Islip, N.Y.) was pitching for the Hawks and drew a walk to load the bases with two outs. Gabrielle Manto (Robbinsville, N.J.) hit a hard ground ball to the shortstop and reached on an error which led to plating Brennan and Lazer for an early 2-0 lead.

In the top of the third, the Bears scored six more runs and in the fourth they scored three more making it 11-0. The Hawks had a tough time against pitcher Morgan Comfort (Hamilton, N.J.) who allowed one hit, two walks, and earned one strike out.
